On my way north last Friday I had the joy of some toser in a black ute overtake me in the pouring rain.

I had wipers on full and was driving about 50kph on a 100kph part of the road, yeah it was raining that hard at the time.

about 10 seconds later they hit water coming across the road and aqua planes, scared the hell out them and they slowed down to the speed I was going .

Moron, they were luck all they got was a fright.

Done. My dislike for sourdough is explained here.

That is of course a matter of taste, which everyone is free to choose. 😉

Trying to discuss the future with some people is a waste of time. Most of them don't even understand the past. 🙂

Probably as the members who like the vegetable are members of the International Brussels Sprouts Foundation, with the (as far as I know) correct name.  :-)

After trigger finger operation my right thumb has improved enough to put a glove on and get back out to the garage to make some sawdust.

The small, inexpensive mini-DAB+/FM/ASA (Automatic Safety Alert) radio, which lurks in standby mode in the bedroom.

In a test involving (simulated) total outages of power, internet, sirens, and mobile network coverage at night (even with localized addressing code), it reliably woke us up by a catastrophic warning test. But it also delivers impressive sound and is a nice little digital (emergency) broadcast radio receiver. The system as part of the national emergency plans has been in trial operation for a few months now (though currently only in Germany). It controls itself; you can't accidentally forget to activate it, as long as you occasionally check the user replacable single lithium battery (which is only needed during power outages or when you're out and about).

Despite all the digitalization and smartphone warnings, one should NEVER do without simplex (digital) broadcast radio reception - too much can go completely wrong and disable the mobile phone masts or overload the mobile network. Don't rely on your smart speakers.

ASA is an invention of the German Fraunhofer Institute - the same people who invented the worldwide mp3 code.

... just to ensure the correct context:

We live in a flood zone of the city, meaning that in the event of a disaster or storm surge, controlled flooding could occur if necessary (however, it is designed in such a way that this can be done without causing permanent damage). In that case, only our basement would be flooded, and we would have to evacuate the house using Zodiacs. The electricity, internet, and heating would obviously be shut off – but that's what expedition stoves, kerosene lamps, and the aforementioned radio (plus smartphones, solar panels, etc.) are for.

Personally, I haven't experienced anything quite so drastic, but people upstream a few years ago, and here during the great flood of 1962, the water apparently reached a meter in the entrances of houses in the city. Houses in the outer districts were below the water level, and people and animals had to be rescued from their roofs by military helicopters. The flood markers are still there today.

The ASA can individually address areas of 1/4 km^2 via broadcast radio using its DAB address code programmed by the user, so that the evacuation can be planned individually and thus proceed quickly.

Anyone who isn't completely blind knows that climate change will cause sea levels to rise during the next years. There is no immediate danger to life, but in that case we will probably have to move at some point beforehand - depending on how quickly that happens. 😉

I do love a bit of the old Shat Man.

This should be interesting and it's not his first foray into the world of music, but certainly his first Metal adventure that I know of.

You have obviously missed his cover of Iron Man by Black Sabbath

It's not easy losing a loved one, but the kindness I've received from so many people while suffering a bereavement has put a smile on my face and restored my confidence that people are good.

Sometimes I use big words I don't always fully understand in an effort to make myself sound more photosynthesis.
