i have noticed that a lot of places that used to have paywave  dont anymore , i noticed because my cards are at the end of their life and now i have to do the insert and swipe action to get them to work, they were fine on paywave.

They don't do this spontaneously, it's a "power move" that's supposed to help assert authority.  There are personal coaches charging a fortune to train politicians (and others) these techniques.  What annoys me most is that it's patently absurd fake quackery to me - but it clearly works with their intended audience, else they wouldn't bother.  People are very dumb - don't overestimate them - politicians don't.

I thought it was the background nodders sneakily getting a bit more air-time, face recognition, appearance of connection to the authoritative interviewee, etc.

I imagine that, just before (and perhaps during) the interview, there's a whole lot of subtle elbowing and shoving to get into the picture.
