This means that $46 million in parking fees and fines is being wasted. $46 million. How much of that ends up lining the pockets of the private contractors, I wonder?

Who cares? Its easy to stop supporting their income. Stop getting fines.

Sure, except that if they got no fines then their parking operation would become a $10.8M cost.

But they not.

They are profiting on stupid/lazy people. Kudos to them. And I have no issue with that. As I mentioned earlier I often see people on our roads without wofs, regos. It irritates me. Why should I have to pay and they don't? Its about time this got sorted out.

I'm not really 'blaming' anybody. I'm merely pointing out the astonishing amount of money it costs to enforce the regulations, and that most of that cost probably ends up making somebody rich rather than benefiting Aucklanders.

There was an interview with the Dunedin Parking manager on Nat Radio yesterday. Unless there is an event on Dunedin wardens don't patrol at night. Some other councils enforce parking time restrictions 24/7 even though there may be no other cars in the street and no pressure on available spaces. Braindead enforcement like that should be challenged. If the wardens have no discretion change the signs.

I don't disagree that some things need to change - parking is up to each council to decide the rules.

My issue is with vehicle owners who continue to operate vehicles on our roads that have no licence, no Rego and no WoF - I would guess that there is higher probability that some of these same vehicles are not properly maintained or basically dangerous and should not be on the road at all.

In order to free up the Police resources (which can only be a good thing) this has been passed to enforcement agencies to issue the necessary tickets. Yes we should complain to the right people if their fees are too high and they are making too much profit, but as said earlier they can only make "profit" from those who have not followed the rules.

Should there be a grace period after expiry? Maybe. But you can buy your license and WoF early - so that 10 days is really a 4-6 week window (someone correct me on the times) - write it on the calendar or use your phone/computer to give you a reminder. VTNZ send me a reminder when my WoF is due and I'm sure I get a reminder for my licence too.

This is quite true, although I rather suspect that the kind of person who will drive an unwarranted, unlicensed vehicle indefinitely will probably also just ignore the fine.

Or, to put it another way, the only people who will pay the fines are those who genuinely just forgot, and simply needed a friendly reminder.
