KiwiNZ: But one of their stores has (had maybe) a staff member that stood out from the crowd but not in a good way. Would have been the most arrogant #@$*& I have had the misfortune to encounter.

I think I met him - haha. May not have been the same guy, but there was a guy at their Ngauranga George store who was so rude and arrogant to my wife, I wondered how they could keep employing him.

Because it is so hard to fire people with all the bs employment law even if you have stacks of complaints you still have to offer training and assistance and otherwise waste time keeping them on doing more brand damage to your company.

If done right managing the dismissal process can be quite quick, one just has to be very exact with the steps to ensure you don't end up back at phase one multiple times. It is a minefield but a manageable minefield.

Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.

PB is pretty good. I went in there the other day to get a SSD, and it was very busy. My complaint was that I had to wait around to get serviced, but the staff seemed to know what they were talking about when they got to me. The prices are pretty good as well.

I haven't got anything from DSE for years. Most of the stuff they sell you can find cheaper elsewhere.

ajobbins: I get their email and am now getting 1, sometimes 2 every day with deals - usually only good for that day, and mostly online only.

Looks like they are pushing that channel pretty hard, but they have had some good deals. I got a Logitech Harmony 650 for $39 with free delivery and a D-Link Wifi security camera for $29 and free delivery in the last month or two.

Here in Oz, under Woolworths ownership they were closing stores, now they are opening more.

Careful if you think you are getting a good deal. I've been price checking a lot of items in their mail outs with their website (and google cache).  A few times they have "adjusted" the savings in the mail out.
One example was an Apple TV.  Was advertised as $149 reg price.  Then it went on sale for "$149 save $10". Then it came off sale "$149".

Also found dse batteries online exclusive.  "$10 save $22".  3 days later a new online exclusive sale - "Priced at $9 save $13.98".

Swann camera - non sale priced at "$279.30", but online exclusive price.  two days later the same item "$299 save $100" online exclusive sale.

Not sure if they are breaking the law, but they must be walking the line.

Detruire: I stopped taking Dick Smith stores seriously after the manager of the Palmerston North store told me that the CGA only requires them to follow up faults with the manufacturer, as this is the reasonable life expectancy of the product. yell

(After that, I flat out asked if that means that they expected, say, a TV with a one year warranty to only last one year, and if he thought that was acceptable. He said yes.)

Pretty sure he was the same guy that served me while munching his McDonalds/BK/Wendy's takeaways after I was having a very poor experience in store with the staff. I complained online and said it was a poor look for the store, and someone took the complaint and then the Palmy joker phoned me and argued with me said it was perfectly acceptable and he doesn't see my problem.  I assumed as he phoned he must have been the manager, since I never specified which staff member it was when I made the complaint.

Needless to say the area manager phoned me later on and apologised for the the actions and the poor handling of that phone call from takeaway-muncher-guy.

I have seen "advertised" prices and "sale" prices. In the past they have had things at their standard price, but in the mailer with a big price tag and in the store with a big ADVERTISED above it, which makes people think its discounted. When it isn't, and it never says it is. This isn't illegal, though if they are suggesting there was a discount on it when there isnt, then its misleading.

Theres a legal requirement regarding discounts and regular prices etc. Should be able to find it with a quick search.

xpd: DSE dont seem to keep much stock on hand anymore.

Then what is the point of them?  If I go to a retail store I want either 1) advice, or 2) the thing right now.   The stories of DSE Staff screwing up trivial technical stuff are many, so they are not for advice.  Therefore the only reason to go there is "I need it now".

If you are going to order it in, why the hell would I bugger about coming to your store twice, and paying more for the item than if I was to order it online myself, and have it delivered to me?  The online experience becomes faster, cheaper and in every way better.

This is how retail dies.

Warning: reality may differ from above post

I totally agree with this.  The advantage of a retail shop like DSE is that you can go to one to physically see the item you are interested, and walk out with it right there and then if you decide to buy.  Without these two things there is simply no point.

People will also go into retail stores to get lower prices.
They'll get the advice on the product, make their choice, price-spy on their phone... and then ask for a better price than they can find on-line.
This is then bettered as it's easy to prove, then they will go to the next store to see if they can get it cheaper again.
Then, finally, they'll whack it on interest free and pay for it a decade later (or whatever).

KiwiNZ: I don't think a week goes by without sales with Harvey Normans, Noel leemings , Dick Smith and JBHIFI. It is a very competitive industry with minimal margins so they are  all trying very hard to maximise volumes. We shouldn't complain the consumer wins with regards to price.

I have purchased quite a bit of stuff from both Noel Leemings and Harveys and never pay the ticket price.

Actually the difference between Dick Smith's continual sales and JB HiFi in particular, is apart from certain exceptions, most JB HiFi sales are 'flier sales', in other words, JB HiFi is more in the Countdown/New World/Warehouse basket (i.e. companies that have week long/fortnight long 'offers' on a regular basis, but never as a really drastic discount/promo)  JB reserve their X % off stuff for the odd weekend promo/long weekends/public holidays/'friends and family days' etc normally.

Even Harvey Norman & Noel Leeming have cut down what I'd consider 'sales' and instead just sticking to advertising promos on set products in the past year or two.

Received an email this morning promising $5 30 pack AAA batteries and $9 40 pack AA batteries with free freight. Went to the link and the price is $30.98 and $32.98 respectivally.

Might pay keeping an eye on these to see if they do come up at the promised price.

Yeah I saw that - but clicking on the link takes to the regular price.

I've been waiting for this sort of deal - having two young boys, I've given up with rechargables and find it easy to buy these packs on special, given how many batteries they go through!

I've tried the 0800 number to see if they can resolve this either way (reduce it, as advertised, or admit it was a mistake) - it obvioulsy goes through to the Aus service, as they say I've reached them outside office hours! I've now emailed them, so if I get a response I'll post back here.

Looks like it now shows correct price on the website. However if you go to checkout it still tries to charge you full price.

They have completely and utterly f****d this up.  it jumps from one price to the other on the web site.  I managed to put them in my cart at the $5 and $9 respectively, yet then at checkout it wants to charge me the full price.

Anyone brave enough to take this up with their (off-shore) call-centre??  My last experience with them was more than frustrating.

looks like it got fixed.  I've ordered some batteries.  But looking at the dse Facebook page comments I'm not holding my breath they would arrive any time soon.
(I tried to call the call centre at 10.50am, but it was out of business hours! ).
