"The dominant culture in a society refers to the established language, religion, values, rituals, and social customs. These traits are often the norm for the society as a whole."

I'm surprised this discussion is still going.  How anyone can get upset about a fantasy 'R' rated entertainment show such as Game of Thrones, is beyond me.  And inspired by one of the the least shocking scenes involving sexual exploitation I've seen since Season 1 no less.  To suggest it's somehow going to change social customs and influence a rape culture in the west is missing the point.

NZtechfreak: ...Graphic depictions of dragons eating people and all the usual gore does not rate alongside a depiction of sexual violence, juxtaposed with a side of psychological torture. If you could watch this scene with no discomfort or even some sense of disquiet, then I honestly don't know where your head is at.

How can you suggest violence ending in death or graphic physical violence does not rate alongside the depiction of sexual violence?  We can only categorize it as "violence" referring to violence for entertainment sake.  If you are opposed to violent entertainment, you should stop watching.  You should not be shocked that a certain type of violence you suggest rates higher has occurred in a TV show known for all types of violence.

I can't speak for others, but I'd suggest any level headed human being (even though slightly over simplified) has two settings for violence (any type of violence for the record, not just sexual).  One for dealing with it in real life where it is actually happening or has happened.  And one for when we are following a story for entertainment.  If you can't differentiate between the two, then I honestly don't know where your head is at.

Geektastic: As I sometimes have to say to Er Indoors....

"Calm down. It's not real."

This really does sum it all up quite nicely, even several posts later.

NZtechfreak: Rank ignorance. You should do some research on what the phrase dominant culture refers to.

Hardly.

The definition is

"The dominant culture in a society refers to the established language, religion, values, rituals, and social customs. These traits are often the norm for the society as a whole. The dominant culture is usually, but not always, in the majority and achieves its dominance by controlling social institutions such as communication, educational institutions, artistic expression, law, political process, and business. The concept of "dominant culture" is generally used in academic discourse in fields such as sociology, anthropology and cultural studies.[1] In a multicultural society, various cultures are celebrated and respected equally. Dominant culture can be promoted with deliberation and by the suppression of other cultures or Subculture."

Thus any culture which is dominant can and often does repress and eradicate that which existed before.  Dominant culture can also change. For example, the Romanisation of Britain following settlement as part of the Roman Empire or the Normanisation following the 1066 invasion.

Just watched this last night. I heard that there was a lot of discussion about the episode, but I avoided it all so I went in not knowing what was going to happen.

When the credits rolled I turned to my girlfriend (who did know what was coming) and said "What was the big shock?". She had to tell me that it was the "wedding night" scene at the end that was causing all the fuss.

While I certainly do not condone rape, you have to look at it in the context in which it is presented. To us it is rape, but to any character in the fictional world of Westeros it was Ramsay claiming his legal right (even if they morally condemn the action).

However, I don't think the question of whether or not it was rape is really the issue. Bad characters do bad things, which creates character motivation for others, and progresses the story.

Should we agree with what he did? No. Should we enjoy watching it? No. But that is exactly the point. We are not meant to like Ramsay, and we are not meant to like what he does. It was not glorified or trivialized, but it was perfectly consistent with the character - which is why I was not at all surprised or shocked.

Edit: Typo - changed condone to condemn.

Hi, anyone who watched the latest episode (from 25th)  mind PM'ing me (so we don't spoil for those who didn't watch it). I am confused (don't recognize the people) to what happened in the last scene.

Have to say GoT is actually becoming a chore to watch. Last few episodes have been a case of which likeable characters haven't been raped/abused/beaten/generally made miserable by someone recently?

Maybe it is due to the compressed timelines but it certainly didn't feel as constant while reading the books. Bad things were happening sure, but not every 5 minutes.

Last few episodes have been 40 minutes of misery following by some plot development.

Maybe I am just getting old.

Looking forward to watching the new one tonight.  I hear it's the best episode in the series so far.

I agree.

I dealt with GOT withdrawal by watching Vikings several episodes at a time and now GOT is back it seems to drag a lot.

Disappointing.

A.

My wife has said that so far, this season is nothing like the other four. I suppose getting over the Joffrey thing (which was a couple of seasons of building the hatred for him) and Tywin is quite big.
Ramsey and Cersei are the new characters for everyone to hate.

Personally (and I haven't read the books or anything, so don't spoil it for me), I hope Arya kicks some ass, Jon Snow does something, and Tyrion gets back to Westeros and makes good on his name.
Now I've said that, they'll probably all be dead by the end of the season...

I agree with your wife. The first four episodes of this season were particularly slow. I think it's picked up since then. I suspect the pace will increase then leave us hanging waiting for next season. And I have the same hopes except Tyrian doesn't have to make good on, just help kick some butt and be appreciated for once. He's one of my favourites.

Ramsey is soooooo Hate-able. I saw the actor working on that spoof song and he looks so openly charming I did a double take. He looks so psycho all the time in GoT, you forget how handsome he really is.

You have to wonder why anybody wants that throne, didn't do any good for the previous owners!

The TV series is pretty much at where the books are NOW and will more than likely be ahead at the end of the season.

The last episode condensed 1/4 to 1/2 of dance with dragons into about 15 minutes.

Nothing like a giant middle finger to the books fanbase.

I wanted to say something about this and it took me a fair while to gather my thoughts on the topic.

It may interest posters to know that NZ abolished the exemption for rape within marriage only in 1985 so we do not need to look back to the middle ages or the time of dragons to find examples of when similar reasons would actually fully apply in a legal sense also. It was not any property of 'new zealandness' that got it abolished and other laws strenghened but many years of effort that got advocates labeled as hairy legged lesbians etc and subjected to ridicule and abuse threats etc.

Many of the reasons given in this thread are still used in court in New Zealand today to defend accused in rape cases.

Well to my mind the burning alive of a young innocent girl was as disturbing if not worse than the original topics scene. I found that pretty horrifying.

Yeah as a parent that was pretty horrible to watch, I know its only fiction, but that scene certainly was close to the edge.
