"The dominant culture in a society refers to the established language, religion, values, rituals, and social customs. These traits are often the norm for the society as a whole."
I'm surprised this discussion is still going. How anyone can get upset about a fantasy 'R' rated entertainment show such as Game of Thrones, is beyond me. And inspired by one of the the least shocking scenes involving sexual exploitation I've seen since Season 1 no less. To suggest it's somehow going to change social customs and influence a rape culture in the west is missing the point.
NZtechfreak: ...Graphic depictions of dragons eating people and all the usual gore does not rate alongside a depiction of sexual violence, juxtaposed with a side of psychological torture. If you could watch this scene with no discomfort or even some sense of disquiet, then I honestly don't know where your head is at.
How can you suggest violence ending in death or graphic physical violence does not rate alongside the depiction of sexual violence? We can only categorize it as "violence" referring to violence for entertainment sake. If you are opposed to violent entertainment, you should stop watching. You should not be shocked that a certain type of violence you suggest rates higher has occurred in a TV show known for all types of violence.
I can't speak for others, but I'd suggest any level headed human being (even though slightly over simplified) has two settings for violence (any type of violence for the record, not just sexual). One for dealing with it in real life where it is actually happening or has happened. And one for when we are following a story for entertainment. If you can't differentiate between the two, then I honestly don't know where your head is at.
Geektastic: As I sometimes have to say to Er Indoors....
"Calm down. It's not real."
This really does sum it all up quite nicely, even several posts later.
