martyyn:
I'm English, so it's root.
Don't get me started on the whole day-ta vs dar-ta thing.
I would suggest many English people from the different parts of England that don't use the same dialect might disagree with you.

I say : The quickest 'root' home is via Riccarton Rd
Rowter as for the instrument used in woodworking and also when I refer to my wireless 'rowter'
Except at rush hour :P
CORRECTION
I say : The quickest 'root' home is via Riccarton Rd at midnight.
Also:
Why do people used woman in the plural form? The plural form is women.
Maybe lets leave this for another thread!
Yabanize:
I used to pronounce it 'root' but lately I have been saying 'Rowte'
Although I have always said 'Rowter'
How about you?
It's a French word and they prounouce it "root"...and this tends to be the way a Canadian would say route - whether of English or French background.
Americans pronoun it "r-out" because they see the word "out" in it...and ignore the e. They invented (or at least dominated the development and marketing of....) "rowters".....so that's how it entered the language with respect to those devices.
Which is interesting....because it is one of those words that has the letters it has in the spelling because the spelling is based on the accent in use by those who defined the spelling" so "route" would be - expanded - r-o-u-te or "roe-oot" - but say it fast: root.
As with many spellings in English, if you actually use the letters in many words you can 'hear' the accent the word had 250-300 years ago when the spelling was first settled. Those apparently useless letters in many words did actually describe / shape the actual sound of the word at the time.

Technofreak: A bit off topic; As for the way they write the date, (MM/DD/YY) that's one really weird way of doing it.
Not if you say dates in this way: May the Fourth, December 25th, etc.
How do you pronounce presentation?
AniNgawhetuPeri: I have only become aware of the right way to say route, is pronounced like grout, but with an r?
My car horn sure doesn't sound "tout tout" ![]()
It may be rowter but it will always be Root 66. I love how a word that can only be pronounced two ways draws more than 60 replies.
