Also:

Why do people used woman in the plural form? The plural form is women.

It's a French word and they prounouce it "root"...and this tends to be the way a Canadian would say route - whether of English or French background.

Americans pronoun it "r-out" because they see the word "out" in it...and ignore the e. They invented (or at least dominated the development and marketing of....) "rowters".....so that's how it entered the language with respect to those devices.

Which is interesting....because it is one of those words that has the letters it has in the spelling because the spelling is based on the accent in use by those who defined the spelling" so "route" would be - expanded - r-o-u-te or "roe-oot" - but say it fast: root.

As with many spellings in English, if you actually use the letters in many words you can 'hear' the accent the word had 250-300 years ago when the spelling was first settled. Those apparently useless letters in many words did actually describe / shape the actual sound of the word at the time.

Technofreak: A bit off topic; As for the way they write the date, (MM/DD/YY) that's one really weird way of doing it.

Not if you say dates in this way: May the Fourth, December 25th, etc.

Except, as the post 2 above yours shows, routE has the 'silent servant "e"' at the end modifying the medial vowels, so rout=grout, but routE is not = grout
