There is pretty good info available, if you know where to look. Wikipedia, patents, USFDA, Pharmac. I generally know the mode of action of prescription drugs I take work.

If you have some background in animal biology (or are prepared to read further) the mechanics will usually make sense. If not I imagine it could be perplexing.

And it's only going to get worse as the targets for pharmaceuticals get more and more into deep biochemistry.

From our POV it actually is magic. We don't really know how most drugs work, so are reliant on "faith" that our GP or specialist or pharmacist knows. Sometimes nobody knows except that it just works (ie Paracetamol - mechanism of action isn't very well understood at all).

I think even your GP only "generally knows".

It's often very complex - and we're talking at the molecular level, with response varying between individuals, and complex interactions.

No one knows how paracetamol works or what it does or whether it's actually beneficial ... but don't worry if you don't buy Panadol you are not being cheated - the generic stuff costs something iike 2c or 4c each can't remember ...

I used to work for the largest manufacturer of paracetamol (as in the chemical supplied to companies who made medicines) in the world. The generic and "name brand" tablets used the same quality and grades. Some might even be pressed into tablets, filled into gel caps, or made up into liquid medicines in the same factories. "No frills" brand is perfectly fine with me.
