It wasn't that obscene.  The place went a bit quiet before she spoke, the message was along the lines of "look you stupid *****s - this is what you've wanted to see - now run off to the toilet to have a good **** - and wash your hands."

Hope that doesn't upset mods here.  It's no worse than what Key junior said, IMO.

I'd suggest it was considerably worse. I suspect there were plenty in the bar who weren't hassling her, but were still exposed to her, and to her foul language, unlike Keys comments which were directed to people who were actually riding the bikes.

Well yes, the people that were riding bikes + everyone on the internet.

Happens when you are walking down the street too.  I didn't realise it was a thing until you mentioned it.  If only they would pull over after doing so...

Yes, if only. However, everyone's brave when driving away in a car. Almost as brave as when sitting behind a keyboard.

Why do you suggest it was worse?  Unlike you - I was there!  You're using your imagination to argue against my first-hand testimony!

I'm not aware that any patron of the bar, nor staff who witnessed it, were perturbed.  Not sure I have the language used verbatim. but close enough.  Nudity doesn't offend me in the slightest, it's what we are all the time after all, under our clothes. I'm a little surprised when people don't adhere to social mores around clothing, but never offended. Those who hadn't hassled her might have been surprised, the yobbos got the message well I thought - stopped them in their tracks.  As I said, I don't recommend trying this in a NZ pub - and it would take quite a character to get away with it - she was certainly a character - and she did get away with it - with a hell of a lot of style.

Key junior on the other hand was just lame, uninspired, and deliberately offensive - without valid reason.  Like a vandal against humanity in general - picking on people to achieve nothing - except trying to score points with his loser crowd of other spoiled brats.

Might surprise you to know that I do not need to be shot to know I wouldn't enjoy it. I can't imagine an interation of your described situation I would have found less offensive than what Max Key said. I admit that everyone is different, but I did just check this with my wife as a sanity check and she wasn't even slightly hesitant about it. She feels the same way.

You say you aren't aware of anyone, but that doesn't mean it didn't offend anyone.  Right now somewhere in Australia you may have someone discussing this very scenario in a completely different light.

I don't have an issue with nudity PER SE, however, I'd object to it (Maybe not enough to make a fuss at the time, but I would think pretty dimly of this womens choice in how to deal with this situation) in this instance and coupled with that language for that purpose.

I don't think Max Key was picking on anyone, he was making a joke, which apparently you can't see the funny side of. You may be surprised to know I've heard way, way worse (last night at my squash club bar WAY worse comments were made about men in lycra) about cyclists.

networkn: Well he got ticked off by his Dad, apologised and said there would be no repeat of the behavior. Case closed. Let's move on.

I don't see any apology occured there at all. It looks like a classic rugby style apology. He's called Dad to apologise to Dad for letting the team down.

Dad told him his behaviour was 'inappropriate'.

Frankly at 21 years old with a chosen career, music, large number of social media followers, expecting it all fixed by a call to Dad and no need to apologise to anyone?

He needs to take some genuine responsibility and issue his own apologies.

We need to learn to tolerate people who in our minds are different to ourselves. What he did didnt offend me, but if it did I should need to get a life rather than getting on social media to make a song and dance about it.

Surely there are more important issues to lose sleep over....

Question for networkn. Assume your wife is out running on her own and and someone yells out to her "Real men ride women!". She comes home and tells you what happened, what do you say?

For me the apology was fine to be low key since the offending was low key. The only people he owes an apology to is the cyclists which he probably doesn't know, and his Dad (maybe).

He doesn't owe you one, nor me.

Anyways, I'm over this conversation. As I surmised in my first post, there are people determined to be offended over every little thing, which I have no patience for. I am all for an overall improvement in some areas of behaviour, but I do not wish to be

part of a society where every little joke is turned into a national newspaper discussion when there are so many other much more important issues to give our attention to.

In my opinion, people in general, need to climb off their high horses and soap boxes, pull their head in and accept a jokes a joke, and be considerably less sensitive.

Exactly. On a busy street when you tend to be looking at the footpath ahead and thinking about whatever while you are walking, it's actually pretty hard to spot the offending vehicle from a moving lane or two of traffic.

From Thursday on after 6pm or so it can get to ridiculous levels. I suspect there is a level of alcohol relationship there.

Anyway someone that posts this to social media? I'm glad they have identified themselves. From there they can be tasked with some responsibility for their actions.

My first question would be... Why would someone say that to someone out RUNNING?

Secondly, I seriously doubt my wife would give a toss quite frankly, but if she did, I'd remind her that it was a joke, and maybe point out the funny side of it.

It should be pretty obvious to you that I wouldn't find such a thing overly concerning, and if it wasn't obvious, then you aren't paying attention.

I just called my FIL who is an Avid cyclist (and a pretty conservative person in general) and he just laughed out loud.

I find people smoking on the street where I have no way to not join them in their filthy habit considerably more offensive, esp since there isn't any funny side to balance it out.

Wow. Lets explore this.

You are at a dinner party, in a group of people including yourself and your wife, and someone in the group turns to your wife and directly says to her, in front of you and the others ..."Hey, have your realised that only real men ride women!"

What would you say? if anything?

You can spend your Friday night trying to come up with increasingly complicated (silly) scenarios by which you try to get a reaction from me that supports your argument but to be honest, I'd suggest you quit while you are ahead.

I've made my position pretty clear. If you can't accept that, I can promise you it won't cause me to lose a blink of sleep.

May I respectfully re-offer the left-overs of the bridge I built to get over it, so you too can get over it ?

Not a silly scenario, I'm just curious if you would be consistent in your view when - same comment, different environment.

So, I can only assume that in the dinner party scenario where someone said this to your wife  ... that you would laugh and say great joke.

Completely different situation. Key's outburst was in passing at speed and he didn't have the guts to stop so the cyclists could have an opportunity to advise him he was being an a$$hat. What Key said was stupid and didn't require activation of any brain cells, whereas in your example the person would clearly have had something on their mind, and you'd have had the opportunity to read them their pedigree.

To my mind all Key's done is prove he can make stupid outbursts without thinking, like thousands of other people do every day. It's hardly newsworthy other than for embarrassing the PM. However, if Key didn't want this to get blown up by the media and on social platforms he shouldn't have posted it, but I guess he sees himself as an entertainer and hasn't been in the news for a while - maybe he's just following the old theorem "there's no such thing as bad publicity".
