Sadly it will get bigger as the world struggles to feed itself. Fonterra need to be a better corporate citizen though!!! We have just learned today that the peterol companies have been ripping most of us off, and I believe supermarkets probably are as well.

I'd like to see an inflation adjusted graph for butter and milk retail price for the last 40 years.

We are producing so much more, and that would usually make something cost less. But there is the demand side and new markets..

I recall a time when milk was delivery only and was not or could not be sold in supermarkets. Again the price graph..

Edit: inflation adjusted might be misleading, average wage might be useful.

Also compared to fizzy sugar drinks. At one stage I am sure milk used to be a lot cheaper.

The farmer milking the cows does not set the price of milk that you pay in the shop - the retailer does.

This is only partially true. Farmers are more often than not part of dairy co-operatives where they are like shareholders, and do have a say (voting rights?) on all sorts of product decisions up the chain. That isn't the final retail price, but it sure influences it.

It's nothing to do with double standards. The number of dairy cows has increased 70 percent since 1994 (3.8 million in 1994 to 6.5 million in 2015) and NZ simply now has too many cows for the land. High intensity dairy farming is harming our environment and killing our rivers and something needs to be done about it.
