There's a certain irony in all these environmental things people do "for my children" when, in fact, their having the said children is the largest cause of the problem they are trying to solve...!

How many people need to buy EVs before we have to fire up Huntly with coal, or buy back and restart Marsden B, or perhaps another dam, cried the fantail as he flew into, flew into the sky......

Well no, actually, the answer to those questions may well decide whether what you are proposing as a solution to what you define as a problem is actually a solution at all.

Blindly doing something so you feel better even though it may or may not be a solution to what you perceive as the problem would make you part of that problem.

I don't know what the environmental load of EV battery production is, though the point has been raised elsewhere. I do know we are in a transitional phase, and the battery technology of today will not be the battery technology of tomorrow. I think this is a false argument.

New Zealand is high in renewable energy and the environmental cost of electricity production has already been paid to a large extent. The hydro lakes already exist. Future production is much more likely to be renewable than to be coal. I doubt there will be many more dams. Geothermal, solar, wind and maybe even wave generation will fill that need. No idea what the environmental cost of that will be, but I bet it will be a lot less than what we currently pay.

There is nothing blind or feel-good about wanting to protect the future, but there is a lot of ill-will and obstructiveness in not giving a damn about it.

The sun is the greatest source of clean energy. Second is the oceans. Third the winds. Forth the fact that the earth is a giant magnet. But nobody knows how to harvest and/or store them. Maybe make the moon do all the work?

Because I don't agree with you and "others", doesn't make me obstinate or blind. I have considered the marketing material originated by "the smartest guys in the room" and since promulgated by the IPCC and the "science is settled" brigade, and decided that I don't agree with their forecasts or their decision on the causes and effects.

The climate does change and is changing it always has and always will, but their predictions have been completely inaccurate and proven to be wrong by actual measurement, but they persist with the marketing anyway.

So, I have an opinion, right or wrong, it is my opinion and is neither blind nor obstinate.

I wish I had the rooms full of supercomputers and the years of training and the smarts and the expensive satellite data and the expeditions measuring ice shrinkage in Greenland and Antarctica and the Himalayas and the North Pole and the universities full of specialised researchers so I could also make such informed pronouncements on the falsity and futility of all that fake data. Impressive.

You got me guv', I shouldn't have added the Harley, don't intend buying that, too dangerous for a cowboy like me, but the rest ain't trolling, it is all true.

Jag XKR, Subaru Forester XS, 2 x Volvo AQAD41P and looking to add a DB9 as soon as the DB11 has therequired effect on price.

I'm picking up my first EV on Saturday, I'm going to use it to commute to work which will reduce my petrol burning by somewhere around 1,000 litres a year. I have replaced the most used light bulbs with 13W LEDs, plenty of light with a lot less energy than the old bulbs used to use, even compared to CFL bulbs the LEDs use half as much power.

I do understand that this is very little in the scheme of things, but if everyone in the world that has a car were to switch to an EV over the next decade or two then it really would make a significant difference. None of us can do much to improve the world, but ALL of us combined CAN make a difference. There are other things that should change which would be done at a much larger scale than the individual person - I'd love to see our national electricity production moved to 100% renewable (currently 80%) and of course it would be good if all other countries tried for the same thing, especially those currently using coal.

For those people that wont buy an electric car today - I would hope that they would reconsider within the next 5 years, there will be many more choices and better performance as time goes on.

The batteries last a long time, 10 years or so I think?

We are 80% renewable now.

If solar was cheaper to install, and the power charging systems were updated so that solar wasn't subsidised to the detriment of the non solar users and the generators,, and many got solar, that will help a lot.

May I ask how much that cost?

We paid $31,500, ready for harvesting in 2024 when, based on current log prices (which isn't guaranteed of course, they may go up or down like any commodity), it will return $84,400. We'll need to pay tax on that .

Sometimes I use big words I don't always fully understand in an effort to make myself sound more photosynthesis.
