If the barber is saying no based solely on gender he is simply stupid, he is surely in business to make money so refusing a large percentage of the customer base due to gender is just plain dumb and I hope his business collapses.

So if I walked into a women’s lingerie shop and asked to try some, I should expect there to be no issue?

Hoping a business collapses and dozens of people end up unemployed just because you don't like the way he chooses to legally do business is honestly incredibly petty, and beneath you.

For every gentlemen's club there is a women's club. There are senior citizens clubs. There are clubs for particular ethnicities or particular occupations or particular political views ..... none of these bother me. I don't feel like I'm missing out, because I am technically excluded from something I have no interest in.

As to the Barber he had a legitimate reason for his business model. Specifically he wanted to create a space where men could talk to other men, without being overheard by female customers. I suspect he isn't missing out on much business. While ~50% of the general population is female. Almost all of the population who wish to attend barbers shop is male. It's analogous to refusing to sell bras to males.

I go to a barbers shop where all the barbers happen to be female. I have never seen a female customer in there. If they decided one day, to only provide services to female customers, I could simply go elsewhere. It really doesn't matter.

The problem here, is that woman and Men are different.

Woman will naturally be better at some tasks than others, this is the same with men. We are not both equal at all tasks.

This is also why we have woman and men only clubs/organizations, because we're different and some times we need to cater to the specific needs of one sex.

Too many people get caught up on making everything "equal" that they forget that we're different.

Forcing one person's ideal of "equality" is also not necessarily equality. To one person equality is 50/50 Male/Female in the workplace, but to another it is getting the right person for the job no matter their sex.

I personally believe, equality is giving both Men and Woman the same freedom's. This to me means woman can have woman only Gyms and men can have the same, if we can both do it, whats the problem?

By forcing everyone to cater for both sexes we're ignoring the fact that we all should know - Woman and Men are different!

I think that's delving into the hypothetical somewhat - very few women I know would ever go to a "barber-shop" for a haircut, so by calling it that, then you're limiting the target market to just slightly over 50% anyway.

Was in Sydney recently, passed by a "barber shop" in Bondi where they were doing cut throat razor shaves and haircuts, serving beers, had a three piece jazz band playing in the evening. The place was of course decorated with stuff reported to appeal to "real" men, motorbikes that leak most of their oil onto garage floors, cars with red leatherette front bench seats etc. I don't recall seeing any women in there, but don't recall a sign being up saying "men only".

Perhaps that's the kind of thing that this is about - it seemed successful/busy. Perhaps the "men only" thing is just a wind up in order to gain publicity - it's not as if those offended would be potential customers anyway.

For a market like London you are right, my son is living there and he was amazed at the number of specialist stores. New Zealand is a very small market and Wellington has cira 300,000. If you want to make a good living you need to maximise market penetration.

But first you need to understand the market your are um... penetrating. A simple place to start would be to understand the demographic that is most interested in the services of barbers stores.

For barber's stores I suggest this could be typified as men who make minimal effort with their hair. Certainly the barbers store I visit is kept busy by a seemingly all male clientèle.

I've been using barbers stores for >40 years and I have never seen a female getting their hair cut (or trying to). Not once - ever.

I think the last time I uses a gender specific hairdresser was when I was in Intermediate School.

There are at least four men's barber shops in Cuba Street now, and more than that many in Willis Street/Lambton Quay.

a few years ago there were at best only 1-2 in the whole of the CBD.
