I just read this article in NZ Herald

Article HERE

It frustrates me that women want female only gyms and other businesses but as soon as there is a male only barber its sexist. I am all for equality but I don't see what the problem is with having businesses and services that cater to a specific sex

When will people stop being PC mad! Does that mean I can go into a Chinese restaurant and demand they make me Italian food and if they don't they are being racist?

I guess that means he won't employ any female hair dressers.
Is that against employment law?

As for customer discrimation seen where night clubs on ladies night give females cheaper drinks. Not sure if still happens but seems wrong to me.

Plenty hair dressers around , if I was turned down because I didn't match their ideal customer description would just take my money else where, not run off to media.

This is nothing compared to what's going on overseas.

No he said in the article that he would hire women.

He's taking the same tack as the women only gyms, saying he wants a place when men can talk freely.  Interesting argument, but unsure if it will hold up if someone challenged it.

Be interesting to see how it all plays out, if it does come back as a "no you can't do that" then I would expect the same rule to apply the other way around.

There's a strawman in that question which therefore doesn't really deserve an answer, but I'll do it anyway.

The answer is no. Easy.

Women want female only gyms because some men who frequent gyms are dirty perving scumbags, others are fat-shaming morons.  I can understand why some women prefer women-only gyms.  A better solution in my opinion would be for gyms to weed out scumbags, and turf them out.  But I acknowledge that would be hard to police and enforce - unless it was extreme.

I'm not sure why men want men-only hairdressers.  Is there a valid reason other than "just because"?  Some contrived mansplanation perhaps?

What's a Race Relations Commissioner got to do with this? Or does she cut hair in her spare time? ;-)

To be honest so would I. Unless the gyms are doing it for “safety” as opposed to comfort.

Double standards pure and simple.

Regrettably I noticed an article in the rag about TV News stuffed suit Mike McRoberts. Good on Mike, he's got himself fit and into great shape. So twitter's on fire about it and a whole lot of women's comments along the line of 'fwoar get a look at that!'. Which is fine, doesn't worry me. But if it was pictures of his sidekick Samantha Hayes looking super in a swimsuit and guys were making the same comments there would be howls of outrage over the objectification and harassment.

BTR: Ok to have Women only but men only isn't allowed?

The article says nothing like that. It says one person who identifies as trans and one person who identifies as queer (might be trans) were turned away on the basis they were women. I don't see any conclusion there or any evidence a complaint has been made.

I have known some women that are just as bad as guys when it comes to eyeing up someone of the opposite sex.  Sure not as many of them but I was even shocked with what some of them say when they see a guy with a nice butt, arms, chest etc.

Some guys just want a place to go and chat with other guys and not have to worry that something they say may be taking out of context etc.  Also the owner might just want to deal with men's cuts.

I am all for "go anywhere you like just don't be a d**k to others you are sharing the space with".  But some people can't control what they say or respect others and this is why you get "women only or men only" places.

close enough to the Human Rights Commission.

I'm amazed that so many people care about this issue of female barbers.  Who gives a flying fudge.  These people got too much time on their hands or something.

That seems unlikely. That's the beauty of a barber. Everyone gets the same cuts.
