Fair enough for TM to b oot you if you don;t stick tot he Ts & Cs. but keeping your $20, even if the Ts & Cs say they can is just theft.
Take them to disputes tribunal. They will cave.

This issue has raised it head again so I thought it would be good to reopen this thread and discuss it here.
Trademe closes down an account if it is the same household ( by IP address I expect ) and then emails the
other person telling them their "second" account has been closed down.
This is a Privacy Act nightmare and also shows ignorance of the internet and IP addressing.
Over 10 years later Trademe have not learnt from their earlier mistakes.
What do others think about this issue?

I can't see how that can occur, because many people share a house, so they could be made up of flatmates who would each have their own account. It would be unreasonable to expect them, all to share the same account, because they happen to live in the same house and share the same internet connection! Surely people have the right to have their own account.
It's a feature to prevent fraudulent accounts, not an issue. I expect like any anti fraud measures, there will be false positives. If that's the case, I'm sure it can be manually overridden if you contact them

Over the years I don't remember anyone saying they were successful at overturning this kind of ban.

In a display of delicious irony the Trademe "security" people emailed both accounts and halfway
through emailing us changed their name from Frankie to Matt talking about the same issue ...
how do I know there is one person or two emailing me from Trademe?? The emails came from
the same account with the same IP address ... tragic .. I was embarrassed for them.
My son was in one part of town my dad in another and my girlfriend in another ...
but still all in Christchurch ... I hate to see how they handled a real attack on their system.
I know multiple people who have trademe accounts living under the same roof, and it has never been an issue. Even using them from teh same PC. I would have also thought they would want more users, than less users, and if it is too hard for people, they will use other market places like facebook to sell stuff. I do wish NZ had a Gumtree here. It is interesting that even though they have ebay in Oz, Gumtree is also widely used. Whereas in NZ it there mainly seems to be one main provider, and then facebook.
I have an account, wife has an account, business has an account, FIL has account - all operating off our connection at home using my domain for emails. Never had any issues and not as if we're hiding it.
Could be more that they look at the history of the accounts, and if majority have minimal trades etc they decide to remove them.

I might regret asking this but . were all the above people using the same trademe account at the same time?
If they were, the TM system only allows a single login per account - so multiple attempts from diff IP's from around the country could very well be seen as an account breach/attack.

What you are saying may be part of the answer. I have noticed on this new system Trademe have installed
lately that when I come back to my desktop even a day later an account can still be logged in to Trademe.
Sometimes I answer a question on my phone when it comes in. If it only allowed one login on the IP address
then it would cause issues if my phone happened to be logged into the wifi as opposed to being on mobile data.
Also my girlfirend, or son or father can also ask me to log on and change something for them or answer a
question for them, the girlfriend will be at work and doesn't have the measurements etc or my dad just isn't so good
with technology and wants me to do the listings for him. Whatever it is Trademe are making assumptions with IP addresses that
should not be made. If we have to log out each time we have used the system then why have they recently changed it so
that the systems are left logged in all the time? Extra advertising revenue while all the instances are still active?

I don't think that there is a limit of one logged in session for each user. Nor that using different IPs is a problem because I've done that for years.
Certainly, I can be logged in on both my desktop web browser and the TM app at the same time. I'm somewhat certain that TM has also allowed me to be logged into TM on both my desktop web browser and my laptop web browser at the same time. Maybe that has changed recently but I'd be surprised.
TM have always been more interested in ensuring that one user has one TM account. They're now more explicit about allowing one person to have a business account which is different to a personal account but that was still possible in the past. For several years, I had an account for charitable fund raising and one for personal trades to ensure that any issues of tax status and charitable purpose were clearly segregated e.g. so people wouldn't think that my personal sales were also for a charitable purpose.
