“We’ve arranged a society based on science and technology, in which nobody understands anything about science technology. Carl Sagan 1996
Have to say, so far, not entirely digging it.
I like Jodi as The Doctor, keep her on. But we could lose Ryan and I wouldn't really care, his character is annoying, his story boring. The writing... yeah, not really feeling it, this last episode was the worst for me, the whole pregnancy sub plot was just silly. I don't care about Ryan's daddy issues, I don't care about Ryan and his step-granddad bonding, I don't care about Ryan frankly, Ryan could be lost in the first 5 minutes of the next episode and I would not care one bit.
We had a 20 second bit in this episode where The Doctor is recognised for who she is and that is just a throw-away, a single mention and a gag and that was that, later on the same pilot who recognised her as having a chapter (volume) in book of war legends of some sort asks if she knows how to "fly that way"... she should be awestruck. fearstruck, in deference, this is somebody who knows at least some of the Doctor's victories, and yet... nothing a 2 second smile of celebrity awe and then forgotten.
It all just seems "wham bam next scene please".

I think the new cast is a good one, and I have no issues with the casting. The special effects are also pretty good, and much better that Dr Who of yore, for instance the realism of the giant spiders was pretty impressive.
However, that being said, I'm close to giving up on watching it. I think the writing and the plots are bad, verging on terrible. Far too preachy, moralising and politically correct for my stomach. I want something escapist entertaining that I can chill out to, and which surprises me from time to time. Instead this series seems to be a series of moralising tales based on contemporary political issues (racism in america, evil capitalists making a quick buck by dumping industrial waste.....), which makes it more irritating than entertaining. If I wanted that sort of entertainment, I could just watch a Green Party campaign video instead.
Plus, I find it a bit irritating that every hole in the plot is "magicked" over with the wondrous all-singing all-dancing sonic screwdriver, which is becoming very over-used as a plot device.
Overall:
- Casting 8/10
- Special effects 9/10
- Plots 5/10
- Writing 3/10
Captured it nicely I think. The last episode I had to keep telling my 17 year old to stop saying "politically correct bull***", but now I have come to the end of my grace period for this series. I'm now officially in the should I bother watching the next episode camp. The glory days of the 9th -11th doctors is well and truly over now.

TwoSeven: I think people are a little bit too early in the series to be thinking about the plot. Usually this doesn’t start to appear until half way through the first season for each doctor.
Which is where we are, there are 10 episodes (plus the xmas special mind) and this was episode 5.

Stop, it's dead already.
Shame, I used to love it, now it's painful.

(At least it's not as bad as the X-files reboot)

Chris Chibnall has said their is no arc this series its all standalone stories.

So the best story-line we have to look forward do is daddy issues..... **sigh**
Dingbatt: The series has already had;
Trophy hunting,
Win at all cost competition,
A despotic American,
Genetic experiments gone wrong,
Toxic waste dumping, and
Gender diversity in pregnancy.
Still to come (IMHO);
A refugee crisis,
A climate catastrophe,
A corporate takeover of Earth.
It's a real shame.
For me the show started going down hill when Stephen Moffat took over from Russel Davies at the end of Tennant's run. But based on his work in Broadchurch, and especially in the excellent Who spinoff Torchwood, I expected Chris Chibnall to really up the quality of the show.
Unfortunately all we are getting are preachy and ham-fisted social commentaries rammed down our throats... and they certainly aren't being subtle about it.
This is doubly disappointing considering how long we had to wait for this season.
gzt: It's seems to me the lower budgets are not providing enough visuals to distract from the story weaknesses. To me the previous stories were just as weak and contained many of these elements complained of here but more eye candy to cover the cracks.
I haven't noticed it looking visually any worse than previous seasons.
