alasta: The only question in that study that I have refused to answer is one about 'sexual orientation', partly because it seems excessively personal, and partly because I don't really understand all that new age gobbledygook.
There's 26 letters in our alphabet, just pick one of them!
This seems like another divisive issue, but I can see why people get up in arms with the claims of what appears to be gross intrusion on top of deliberate misrepresentations over how long the process takes.
Bung:Geektastic:gzt:Geektastic: Why can't they move it to an online format so people can complete it when it suits?
Because they would be never? : )
It works for the Census.
Worked but not well. The 2018 Census had lowest participation rate of last 5 Censuses. Regarded as a shambles
They use an online format for the compulsory Agricultural production survey that roughly 50% of all agricultural businesses must participate in every year - it gets quite in depth and a pain to fill out sometimes - From experience they do chase you up and get grumpy if you haven't filled it out by the appropriate time . 50% of an industry seems a little extreme particularly for an annual survey
JimmyH:
The length of the survey and the requirement to find receipts going back 12 months seems a bit over the top. Personally, I couldn't comply with that even if I wanted to - unless it's a really major purchase I don't keep those receipts. Plus, for a lot of small purchases, I just pay bu eftpos or cash, and don't even bother with reciepts. Fining me still wouldn't enable me to magic paperwork I don't have out of the ether.
I went through one of these, and I don't keep or ask for any receipts for anything I buy personally (pretty much all reputable stores keep a copy electronically for warranty purposes) I just told them them this and they were fine. I suspect they people told the stats person yes I do have the receipts but will need to find them to which the stats person would have said fine yes you do that.

Three hours is too long, and there should be no need for receipts. If you are asked a question and you are honest, that answer should suffice. It also needs to be publicised. Ive never heard of this. It should be common knowledge as is the reason why.
I agree that 3 hours is too long. But if Stats NZ say that the average time to complete the survey is 40 minutes then that's probably true, after all you'd expect them to be able to accurately calculate something like this! Maybe this particular couple managed to drag things out?
My understanding is that in the past they only picked 3,500 households for the survey but that this year they've upped it to 20,000. I guess that's why not many people knew about it and it's going to become a lot more widely known as more people have to complete it.
k1wi:
TL;DR - Please please please do the surveys, they are incredibly valuable and Statistics New Zealand really does value the time and effort it takes respondents to complete them.
IMO they don't value people's time because they don't pay a cent for it.

You can choose whether to apply for a mortgage or a particular job. You can't choose this.
Of course you can? You can simply pack your bags and head to a country that doesn't have these requirements.
Are you trying to get rid of me?

No, I am saying people have a choice. It's compulsory if you live here and meet the critera, to fill in these questionaires if selected. It's no different from obeying road rules, or many other things that are a requirement of being a member of a country.
Is it inconvenient? Probably. Is it intrusive, maybe to some (me included), will I do it without "poisoning the well" or any of the other things that have been mentioned, yes, because it's my duty. Not every chore I need to do, is something I like.
Most people have spent more time participating in this thread complaining about it, than it would take to complete it.

Accounts o the iternet suggest much longer time were experience - but they may be extreme cases
40 minutes is ~50% of my free time on a weekday evening.
And after work and a work-out, my brain is mush so ....

I have read that a few times here over the years, when a whinefest overcomes the actual exercise discussed. Humans are a quirky lot
