"Why queues for women's toilets are longer than men's" (sic).

Well, that's easy. If a man has to wait more than 3 minutes to pee, he will find a pot plant :)

You should visit Toast Martinborough. The number of "ladies" (and I use the term in the widest possible meaning) I have seen using roadside verges and ditches with no shame...

All print media seems to be going this way, but critically this will drive up expectations of content and editorial quality - and proper grammer and spell checking.

.

Oh, the irony.

FAKE NEWS!

i pay a subscription to  the Washington post, but that is a real Newspaper and worth every penny . The Herald not so much.

They let you do that from overseas? I have made a couple of donations to the Guardian, but have not subscribed.

No to Paywalled NZH.

I subscribe to the NY Times ($4/month and worth every cent) and contribute to the Guardian.  Those, and the ODT for local stuff (hell, even if paywalled) will do it for me.

They would have to pay me to read Mike Hosking's incoherent, drooling-moron-on-drugs "opinions".

Can you please explain why you, a lawyer, have posted potentially defamatory accusation about someone?

Can you explain why you don’t seem to understand a figure of speech like just about every other person who has read that comment managed to? One of the other complainers was networkn, a person well-known for trawling every post of mine to find something to complain about. The irony/hypocrisy here is that he is the same guy who yesterday effectively described the now former PM of Australia, who is an Oxford graduate and a Rhodes Scholar, a rather stupid person. Let’s see whose general assessment of their subjects’ IQ was more correct, eh?

Networkn: let’s see how your keyboard warrior act for decency here lines up with what you say about Labour politicians, shall we?

After all that I am still keen to understand the reasoning behind your comment.  Please?

If the Herald goes paywall, their online readership numbers will plummet further, probably even more so than they did after the last God-awful redesign.

Kiwifruta: I think it’s a positive, more money to pay for quality journalism.

You have to have "quality journalism" to begin with.

Grass roots journalism, excellent investigative journalism on relevant topics that matter, no sensationalist journalism, (I don't give a flying F* on what celebrities are doing), good grammar checking, good spell checking, very minimal advertising.

What ever happen to the "Fourth Estate" that once could and did topple governments and leaders. I want articles that will bring people to account; politicians, corporate bosses big and small, I want articles that will uphold our democratic system, I want articles that will uphold our excellent social welfare system (compared to most countries it is). I just want good solid, factual and investigative articles and well thought out editorials. Then I might think about paying.

Of course technology has made for lazy journalism. Instead of the good old face to face fact checking you now have google. Checkbook Journalism still has a place used judiciously but even that is disappearing.

Is the "Fourth Estate" vanishing and being replaced by the "Fifth Estate" and its Joe Bloggs "Fake News"?

What is "Quality Journalism"? Here is a really good research paper: WHAT IS QUALITY JOURNALISM AND HOW IT CAN BE SAVED BY JOHANNA VEHKOO She makes an interesting open sentence:

I am not that worried about the survival of newspapers, but I am deeply concerned about the survival of journalism.

The Fourth Estate? :)

Poster is probably mixing up Brian Edwards' occasional appearances on Fourth Estate with the legendary Brian Edwards vs nz prime minister Muldoon.

JimmyH:

"NZME will adopt a “freemium” model with day-to-day news and current affairs provided free of charge, and premium in-depth analysis and opinion available on subscription."

ROFLMAO - they don't have any premium content and probably don't have the capability left or even available in NZ to produce it.

As Robert Muldoon once famously quipped:

"I will not have some smart alec interviewer changing the rules half way through."

They don't make politicians like him any more! Shame really, Wellington needs some colour in its dull corridors.

Reminds me of when Helen Clark called John Campbell a sanctimonious little creep after he ambushed her with the Corngate story.

And I agree with her.
