i think the intensity and speed caught them out. there was nothing all that bad on the rain radar. a bit of flooding in heavy rain is expected, no one expected that amount in such a short time period.

Actually competent weather services didn't seem to have this problem, WU was reporting 40mm a day or two in advance, then it began to creep worryingly up and up the closer it got. Metservice dropped the ball on this one almost as badly as Mayor Brown did.

Cellphone Emergency alert for Auckland tonight just received on my phone.
Metservice making up for being absent yesterday ?

I'm expecting Wayne Brown to call an emergency press conference next month to tell us to stay safe.

After he finishes his tennis match.

Gotta do the important mayoral stuff first!

I just got that too, wonder why that didn't happen on Friday when there was (obviously) an issue?

As to the alerts not coming through on Friday? Sorry I don't buy that as an excuse. As Senecio points out, we're meant to get 6mm of rain and got an alert - where was the one for 300mm? Going your definition of alert levels there, we should have received one on Friday stating 40mm was on the way - but there was nothing, and 4 people lost their lives as a result, whereas if they had been alerted, they could have moved to higher ground or gotten out of harm's way, at least.

The Emergency Alert this evening talks about thunderstorms.

Right now, Blitzortung - although notoriously unreliable - is showing a grand total of four lightning events in the last two hours for the whole of NZ and its surrounding oceans.

i think parts of auck are getting more than 6mm at the moment. looks like they are getting a bit of a hiding, poor buggers :(

at the moment there is more heavy rain on the radar than i saw on friday.

those downpours are very localised. i had almost no flooding near home where it always floods and flooding where it normally doesn't. like us at work a few weeks months back, we got pounded by the heavist rain i've ever seen that flooded the shed, over flowed all the gutters and drains. drive a few km's down the road and there is nothing. very localised.

Yeah, there's very little activity, been keeping an eye on the raw data (I run a feeder) and there's not much happening. Now Australia OTOH...

Plenty of thunder and lightning west of Hamilton for the last 20-30mins none shows up on any of the lightening trackers as they're not ground strikes...

North Waikato, plenty of lightning activity visible, but only two actually detected by the weather station in the last three hours, I guess due to the above reason.

Still 180 strikes detected since midnight, though.

There's a difference between predicting and reporting though. Blitzortung can't be used for prediction.

Do they send the texts? I thought they came via the city councils.

I never implied anything about prediction. Obviously it only reports historical strikes - but is effectively a waste of time for the reason others have given - it only reports ground strikes and hundreds or thousands of air-to-air strikes go unreported.

Does anyone know if the Auckland Airport car park was flooded? I know the international terminal side was flooded but I am trying to find out if the long-term car parks were flooded. We are flying out this coming Sunday and will be leaving our car in secure non covered area and I see another Auckland Deluge is possible later this week, so I did not want to come back after 9 days with a toddler and baby to a possible flooded car 10PM out of the airport.

Thanks. We are using their Valet car park service so unsure where they normally park the car on our behalf. I am going to call them and request them to either park on top story or downgrade from valet to self-parking on top story.
