ptinson: If you want a good pie you really should try Muzzas Pies, richardson road Mt Albert.
I remember GP as being very average at best...

Hmm I live very near there. I need to go there.
Thanks for the tip.

+1 for muzzas pies. Used to live just on the next road down from them, always good.

I'm picking it will be a small amount of pies available for a limited time, like KFC did when they introduced the double down.
I really don't see them launching a full pie store or bringing them back full time.

You mean "going to the minimum effort possible to retain their trademark so it doesn't lapse and someone else exploits it"?

Pricing announced. I hope they're really good for $4.50.

Initially, only at 11 outlets across Auckland and Waikato from June.

I work just over the road from the St Lukes shopping centre, so I'm thinking I'll give one a go to see if they are like I remember them. has to be with fries to dip into them.

They won't be really good.  They probably won't even taste the same as they used to as McDonalds are removing a key flavouring ingredient - MSG.

I was right about the price being $4+

That's a pretty expensive pie, especially if you have a couple, plus some chips and drink etc

Prediction....There will be lots of grizzles - few people will be happy.

They dont taste like they used to.
The fillings are all different.
The pastry isnt like it was.
etc etc.

Even if they were taken from the same recipes and used the same equipment and ingredients people will still be unhappy.

The reason is that people have built their memories up over time and will expect too much.
They will just seem like fairly average mass produced pies.

Yep - I remember I liked them - but I couldnt honestly say they were the best pies I ever had.

Find a good local bakery and spread the word - geekzone is a great forum for this (hint).

MacDonalds doesnt need more money.

A colleague was there. His actual words:

I can tell you they taste exactly as they did 15 years ago too! The only thing they've removed is the MSG.

I think that sounds plausible. If they don't use it, they could lose it. They are only dipping their toe in, and at that price I can't see it being successful. They had to be around the 2-3 dollar mark. Burgers haven't gone up that much in the same time,. My recollection is the pies were cheap, but not that great. It was a cheap meal. You can buy a pack of pies from the supermarket to heat up far cheaper, if you eat that sort of thing.

The price is about right as long as the pie is a decent size and tastes like it used to. Decent pies these days cost about that (like BP Express or a good bakery). Lots of people moaning in barely intelligible text speak on Facebook about how they're no longer $1...

This will be like watching MacGyver after 15 years. Never as good as you remember and probably best left as a fond memory
