Saw Sony KDL-40EX500 down to $1200ish and 46EX500 down to $1800, that's quite a big reduction off the regular price from what I've seen.

Went down to HN this morning and picked up the Samsung 32" LCD TV for $448. They were flying out the door (there were three of us lined up with one each)

I got the netbook (rainchecked Asus) last year from HN and was interested to see they were offering another one this year. I wasn't really tempted (as much as I love my asus) as the e-machine one comes with a 3 cell battery and XP and netbooks overall have dropped in price so the saving, while significant, wasn't a steal.

Of interest though is that the Hamilton HN had all these netbooks tied together with a $89 bundle that included a case, wireless mouse and some other stuff. When I say tied, they were literally strapped to the bundle with that strapping tape and you needed scissors or something to separate them.

I'm sure if you argued the point you could have bought the netbook by itself but everyone I saw that had one had the bundle.

Methinks that's a rather sneaky sales technique - I wonder if the other HN stores did the same?

Anyway - back to TV's - Noel Leeming were doing a Thomson 32" LCD with builtin DVD and USB/divx support for $399. I would have been tempted but no freeview. JB had a Panasonic 32" LCd for $498.

I got a samsung galaxy 5 from DSE today. Just won out over the 845 because I have a chance I will be able to get batteries etc for it, whereas searching for 845 battery gets nothing.

And a new battery for the car so I can get it working. Repco excluded car batteries from their 25% off so I thought screw you and went to supercheap and got a bigger one for the same price.

Had an interesting experience in NL today,

We got one of: http://www.noelleeming.co.nz/kitchen-laundry-appliances/small-appliances/misc-appliances/breville-bpz500pe-the-pete-evans-stone-baked-pizza-maker/prod106047.html

However, before the sale went live, we noticed the price (on the website) was ~$129, as soon as the site had been updated to include the 20% discount for it, price was showing (as it does atm) $175.  Went in the store today, they had one on display on the shelf w/ a ~$219 price tag on it, 'effective 25th Dec' (hence $175 w/ discount), and a second display w/ all the boxes, w/ the $129 price tag.

Managed to get it for ~$100, which is pretty cheap, considering Good Guys in .au have priced them at about A$139 ($180).

Also managed to pick up a cheap Samsung 5 phone from DSE, and freebie SIM from Telecom, so not a bad haul this year.

That's just not on. Briscoes got done for that or something similar in the past by the commerce commission, so IMO, report them.

Oh don't worry, as soon as ComCom reopen (Wednesday/Thursday I presume, I'll be calling up and going crook.  Although they did honour the lower displayed price after a few attempts (they tried to claim the 20% discount didn't apply in that case and then couldn't work out how to correct it in the their computer :(), however I don't know : a) if they put the sign back or not, b) how many they sold nationwide at $175.

I have a noticed a few things as well. For example, the Canon A495 camera.

http://pricespy.co.nz/product.php?p=539822

Normally $97 (not discounted), now $135.96 with 20% discount.

So do I have a leg to stand on re what I said on previous page?

A desktop fan could be considered a small appliance, as by definition a "Small appliance refers to a class of home appliances that are portable or semi-portable or which are used on tabletops.". But a desk top fan could not be considered a vacuum cleaner by any stretch of the imagination.

I think if you specify "cameras" it is obvious whats going to be discounted, cameras. But if you use something broad like small appliances, surely that covers everything small appliance like that is not already mentioned specifically?

Also as another separate question, for years now when buying from various large chain stores, when the sale is almost clinched and I ask about cost and duration of extended warranty, they almost universally say "oh thats $140, but you can have it for $100", etc.

One place I went to yesterday was all righteous about it and said all the people who have ever done that should have been sacked by now as its a serious breach in company policy, and that those prices cannot be discounted under any circumstance.

So behind the scenes whats going on? Does this mean in actual fact the extended warrant is paid in full, but the store just gets less for the product (seems to be the way I would think it goes), or is there something more sinister going on, as this person was suggesting?

I personally wouldn't spend time complaining this to ComCom, however, they definitely need to be clearer with their advertising.

This issue came up recently with my colleague in Australia. She wanted a KitchenAid mixer. David Jones had a discount off all "kitchen appliances". However, for some odd reason, the KichenAid mixer wasn't included in the sale; they didn't even put it in the exclusions list. Apparently they classified the mixer as "household appliance". Anyway, it's a matter of semantics.

I came across something interest a few years ago with a PSP game from bond and bond

The game was on clearance and they had left all the price labels on it and simply put new ones over the old ones. There were about 10 price labels on the game.

By peeling back the stickers I could see that the original price for the game was $59.99 and you could see the price reductions over time. The price stickers include a date code which is fairly easy to work out so I could see that it was on the shelf for $59.99 for 6 months before being dropped to $49.99 etc...

Of particular interest was a couple of occassions when the price went up i.e from $29.99 to $39.99. Funnily enough, the price went back down to $29.99 a week later according to the next price label.

Now part of me thinks maybe that was a pricing mistake which they realised a week later and corrected but it happened more than once and  the cynical side of me thinks there was a game sale on for those weeks.
