Your right about earthquake capable buildings are designed not to fail and kill, they are not designed to be re-used.

But the issue over buildings is interesting. Buildings have failed predominantly due to being already unsafe. Many many brick buildings, many are old, they have now all gone or are going. The issues with homes is different. Being small, they are strong laterally. Excluding old homes with internal issues, many old and not so old homes that were in the line of fire have got away with minimal structural damage. Because the land is stable and has not shifted laterally or vertically. Many are closer to the epicentres than the badly hit east side, but no matter how good the house ,you have no show on land that fails. That is the fate of the east side.

---Look at the cluster of quakes the past 2 weeks. Almost entirely under the north and eastern sides of the old crater. ---

Hopefully faults. The June 13 was parallel to the Feb 22 about 3km over. Then Port Levy gets many many aftershocks. Then a 5.4 at Halswell, the same faultline of Feb 22. The area is fracturing like cracked glass, one day the pressures from these and unknown faults will ease, but in 2 years??

wreck90:
vamsee: I dont think Salaries are doubled, they are higher for sure, but in places like brisbane are equal to Auckland. Taxes are not higher as well, they are very similar to our rates if you calculate it fully.

wreck90: The Christchurch earthquake has contributed to the exodus to Australian.

John Keys government is one of the most popular , so I don't expect National are the reason.

My opinion is that the exodus consists of economic migrants, christchurch refugees, and foreign nationals who gain NZ residency with expectations of moving to Australia.

Remember, salaries are double or more for some professions. Although, the Australian tax rates are very high so high earners would take that into account.

The NZ herald has been advertising for GP's in Adelaide for $A450,000 salary. I don't think gp's are paid that well here, why not go?

I believe salaries may be double in some cases.

Taxes are actually higher in Aussie for higher earners --- you earn over $180k  and I you pay 45%...that is really high compared to here.

you're spreading misinformation

AU has a graduated tax system
0-6000 0%
6001-37000 15%
37001-80000 30%
80000-180000 37%
1800001+ 45%

+ in your salary you get another 9% superann paid
