ajw: The exodus to Australia continues.

http://www.nbr.co.nz/article/record-number-leave-live-australia-ck-95729

That always seems to happen when National is in government. They say they will make everyone prosperous, but instead they push wages down and working conditions are eroded even more...and people end up feeling insecure, poorly paid and overworked....while the companies they work for do better than ever. Young people now face having to do "work trials" for free to even get a minimum wage job. One shop I know used "work trials" repeatedly to supplement existing staff...and there were no real jobs there to fill. It was just free labour.

The people at the top reap the rewards and everyone else gets screwed. Why anyone would vote for the National Party is beyond me.

Youth rates will be next. Watch the meaner employers just employing young people.

Is that better or worse than only employing older people because you don't think it's worth paying young staff the same?

Age shouldn't come into the equation.

You employ someone to do a job. If they do it, you keep them. If they can't - with training - then you don't. Age isn't relevant....nor should it be.

If the sort of work you offer isn't the sort of work that can sustain an adult, then you employ teenagers. They are flexible because they are at school and don't / can't work all day every day.  They will work for the miminum wage. They generally do the job or you don't bother. Paying them less is just adults stealing from kids.

It's worse.

They say that youth rates will make youth unemployment lower, which if true, means that it's pushing older people out of jobs.

Personally I think it's more important for an adult who has to fend for themselves to have jobs than a younger person who probably has parents who can help them.

If they don't have parents with money, on the other hand, then the kind of wages they will drop them too wont be nearly enough to support them anyway

So, it's worse.

Would you prefer a record number of Aussies came here????

LL's soapbox aside... for some Canterbury folk there's lots of good reasons to move from the shakey isles. And after the rain they've had in Oz the grass over there really is greener.

It seems Mr Key has a nice smile so he gets voted for.

You missed out how the family silver also gets lined up for sale when National is running short on ideas.
In my opinion electricity generation in particular is too vital an asset to ever sell into private hands.

Govt needs to get spondulacks from somewhere (and it's not just the Blue team that have had garage sales). As long as they don't follow the practices of old (Railways/Telecom/AirNZ) and maintain control thru ownership rather than golden rivets and minority shareholding.

The key to making it a win-win is being able to get some cash out but still maintain control over the asset. Doing that thru legislation rather than good business practices is an expensive mistake many of our governments have made... and will probably continue to do.  But then thats why us taxpayers are such an important lot.

The sooner we become part of Aussie the better.

They wouldn't be coming here to earn better wages and salaries.

It does.

I have found, as an employer (hospitality), that older employees are more reliable.  They don't get wasted and turn up to work hungover the next day, the are more mature so find dealing with "difficult" customers easier, and they seem to have more stable home arrangements which reflects positively in their work.  Some customers also don't like being served by someone too young (go figure).  Of course there will be exceptions to my observations.

The youth rate makes hiring these "risky" employees an easier decision to make.  I wouldn't hire all youth staff as it'd be a nightmare.  It's a balance of hiring the best staff from both age camps.

As with anything, there will be employers who abuse it (I have a customer who's daughter did a dozen "trial" full days at a cafe she applied at only not to get hired or paid at all, complete bs) so it's a balance of getting youth into jobs vs no jobs at all.

Remember, not all employers are evil bastards - some of us actually do care about the people who work for us.

/all my 2 cents.

If it can happen across Europe... it shouldn't be that hard down here. Right?

And if we're really cunning about it and get a State status for each island it'll be a case of the tail wagging the dog.... hey all the Kiwis in Oz would vote for it. Right?

I'm not going to agree or disagree with youth rates coming back in but I think no adult should be working in a job with minimum wage. We should be working towards an economy that is focused on skilled labour, not perpetuating the minimum wage/minimum effort attitudes.

All comments are my own opinion, and not that of my employer unless explicitly stated.
