Spotify is the only on-demand music streaming service that’s not web-based. Instead, it uses a peer-to-peer network (p2p) that can scale up to meet the demands of millions of users.
Only 8.8% of music playback comes from Spotify’s servers. The rest comes from the peer-to-peer network (35.8%) or your local cache (55.4%). The exception here is Spotify on smartphones, which gets all the music directly from the Spotify servers.

Lastly, Digital music has been around for many years now. I find it weird that people are getting onto services like Spotify and Rdio to find obscure (?) or relatively rare tracks. I would have thought that you would have already had this in your collection. What's the size of a typical spotify/rdio users music collection? If listening to the music you want (your choice of tracks) so important why haven't you taken the time to digitise your music collection already? Are you falling for a hype or looking to be different in the way you consume your music?

I already have all of my music collection digitized. While I still prefer to purchase CDs, as soon as I get them home I rip them into iTunes, so I can play them on my iMac while I work, and access them on the stereo in the lounge via the Apple TV. iTunes informs me we have 35.12 GB of music (5570 items).

I personally use Spotify to play albums I've not purchased, or have in formats which aren't as accessible in my office (e.g LP). Its also a great legal way to try before you buy.

I'm currently using the 30 day premium trial, but will probably switch back to the free version once the trial finishes (due to an impending upsizing of our mortgage). Playback quality will dictate whether I stick to it, but my initial impression is that the free version is acceptable in that regard.

Data is not an issue for me as I am on an unlimited plan.

I would rather pay a monthly subscription fee and listen to whatever I want than fork out for individual songs. It suits my listening style and allows me to discover new music easily.

It is a great service. I walk into music stores these days and just laugh. $30+ for a cd you have to be joking. With kindle as well I haven't bought a physical book for a few years. I really wouldn't want to own a book store, I think the most I have paid for a book lately is $9, I saw the same book for $40 in a store. Anyway off topic....

I have been interested in getting Spotify, but was put off as soon as I saw it REQUIRED Facebook.
I don't have a Facebook account, I don't want a Facebook account.

Can anyone who has used Rdio in the past and now has Spotify - how do they compare?

I never caught on to getting my music through iTunes or any other pay for a track service as searching for what I liked never comes naturally. I don't know what I like until I have heard it, and I generally don't know the name of the song unless I have time to Shazam (or similar) it.

Why don't you just make a fake facebook account then? All you need is the email and password that you used to make the account to log into spotify. You could even make a throwaway email account if you were that worried.

I agree, what service gives free access to millions of songs, sure there are ads, but they aren't that intrusive, and if you want no ads, then pay.

Other sites ask for full name, date of birth etc, so using Facebook is really no different. And its not hard to create a fake profile if that is your desire to be able to access Spotify.

New Zealanders have long cried out for services such as Spotify, but when we get them, they moan because of one little thing.

For those not interested in spotify because you need to have a facebook account, I really pity them.
Spotify is an awesome service which I personally have used since its American launch last year.
I listen for hours every day and have found so many new artists and songs that I love.

Just get over your fear of facebook and join just to get access to spotify, you don't even need to use facebook.

I did this for a mate

Create a fake gmail account
Create a fake facebook account
Login to Spotify with fake facebook account

All this within 30 minutes.

From then on you never have to use the Facebook account other than using it to login to Spotify.
