The fact that replacing my Kindle Oasis with the newest version (due to slowly worsening battery performance) would cost me a painful NZ$850 or so!

You could look into replacing the battery.
A quick google finds them $40 or so.

I can't see how you'd open it.

How?! They were on sale Prime day but they are $250USD at the usual price.

I doubt that was a current model Oasis.

Says $399 when I click. Also needs to be the larger memory version.

It showed with US$ 269.99 for me first, then changed to US$ 499.

Try this instead: Amazon Kindle Oasis search.

Better. $449 for the wifi version and $559 for the LTE version, plus presumably import duty etc.

Would the LTE version work in NZ?

Looks like PB Tech will be getting the 32 GB Wi-Fi version

I have a previous generation 3G/WiFi Kindle that works here. I presume they are intended to work worldwide if you buy the international version?

Well spotted on the PBT front.

I'll order it there. Looks like I still need to get the cover from Amazon itself, but at least that won't be expensive enough to incur fees.

I'd love an Oasis. Just can't justify it.

My KindleDX is getting a bit short on battery life now (have to charge it weekly, I use it for maybe an hour a day).

I've bought 2 but they weren't that expensive. Decided the 3G was too much of a premium esp now with tethering such a thing. Haven't missed it much.

They seem to have continiously cranked the price, but in reality, if I broke mine, I'd replace it if only for the reasons it has physical buttons which I really missed when they went from the original format to the new one.

Screen is better, it's waterproof, lighting is better etc but yes it's getting overly expensive.
