Geektastic:

Couriers. Again.

Calls DHL over missing international shipment.

"We will instruct our team to initiate a search. Our service standard is to call back with the location of the package within 2 hours."

1 hour and 45 minutes later

"Hello, this is DHL. I am afraid we have not heard back from Courier Post yet, so we won't be able to meet our service standard. We will call you before 0900 tomorrow. My apologies, but they have let us down by not responding to us in time."

This morning:

"I have finally had an update from Courier Post. It seems that they are declaring the shipment lost. We will report this back to DHL in Singapore who will initiate the claim with your supplier."

So took them 4 days to report to DHL that they had lost a parcel on which the tracking online reports:

"28 Sep 19 5:02 AM - Delivery arranged, no details expected - NZ REGIONAL SERVICE AREA,NEW ZEALAND

Signed By - Rural Post martinborough MCP***"

I used to work with an environmental group, well before saving dolphins from dying in tuna boats was popular.

Somehow that sounds like a line from Monty Python....

It annoys me that in all this mass coverage of the Dunedin party tragedy, I’ve only seen 1 story that mentions “alcohol”, “drunkenness” or words to that effect.

Most stories are white washing this as an end of lease party where students were just “having a good time”. Although I did see an unintentional pun was that parties "were typically held in good spirits".

Have the alcohol companies’ PR influence got that strong a hold on the mainstream media?

Why not call a spade a spade? And maybe restart a mature discussion about the role of binge drinking in our youth and wider culture.

I mean why else do teenagers flee parties when campus watch / police turns up?

Why else do people jump from stairs to land on other people?

Why would other people still be trying to force their way into the party during the crush?

Why are broken bottles littering the street the morning after?

Hint: It’s not because of sobriety

Agreed.

It's a strange relationship we have with booze. I bought 6 cans of Heineken zero alcohol beer at the weekend. My wife (not a big drinker at all but bigger than me) said "what's the point?". I replied that the point was that alcohol, even in small amounts, gives me a headache as she well knows and that I drink because I like the taste not because I need the alcohol fix.

I would buy alcohol free versions of all the drinks I like if they tasted the same and were actually available.

FWIW, the Heineken is really a very good option provided it is cold. Hard to tell apart from normal really.

The downside to being more or less teetotal is that I now find events at which drunks are present extremely irritating!

what annoys me is that they charge pretty much the same price as the full strength beer when it's  0 alcohol  and should have no tax and be a lot cheaper.

Common sense is not as common as you think.

This was initially rumored to be the cause.

However it appears to be more mundane.

Shortly before the police arrived, people were still trying to get into the party, while others were trying to leave.

The stair case was packed with people like dominoes. One person tripped, and there was a large dog pile.

Even when there was a large dog pile, people continued to push their way into the party. That and people not realizing how serious the situation was slowed down rescue efforts.

A number of people were unconscious. The last person extracted was dead.

All based on hearsay.

That's the problem I have with low strength beers, I like things like Panhead's Supercharger, Emerson's Bird Dog etc, but low alcohol beers like Steiny Lite and Amstel light almost have no taste. I tend to just have a Coke if I'm thirsty and have to drive, or nurse a low strength one for the evening.

I was charged $15 for a Virgin Mojito in the weekend. I was not impressed! It was a swanky event, but regardless, that is taking the piss, literally.

Dropping my phone charger cord behind my desk. There it must stay until my wife gets home.

Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.

There are some pretty cheap ingredients in a Virgin Mojoito

lime juice
white sugar and water (simple syrup)
mint leaves
sparkling water
ice

If it's fancy it may have honey instead of white sugar. For very fancy catering, I'd expect the cheapest honey available.

Low/no alcohol beer is the fastest growing beer segment in Holland, surely that must catch on here eventually? Heineken 0.0 tastes like water that is off..

Lots of things about going to movies in theatres.

Starting with the markup of popcorn is literally over 12X. This has been a fact for decades.

I now show up at movies 12 minutes late, because commercials now run at least 14 minutes at my local Reading Cinema, in a somewhat rundown suburban location.

Then every financier has to slap the moniker at the beginning of the movie, and of course the inevitable Dolby plug. Last movie I went to this was 2 minutes.

The ending credits which, I kid you not, had a credit for fruit vendor.

Then the final slap in the face, a "secret" 30 second segment at the very tail end, to make sure fanboys sit through the credits.

Is it any wonder streaming services are clobbering movie theatres?
