No, what I’m saying is the biggest disaster gets the biggest billing, because for the media it is all just disaster porn. Comparing Bezos’ media minutes with last year’s coverage of CC when there was/is a pandemic is just playing with numbers.

Why didn’t they compare it with coverage of a royal wedding?

Yes, I always figured that it would be easier for us to reduce global emissions by 0.16% rather than trying to reduce NZ emissions by 100%

Recently in Germany due to heavy rainfall caused floods. This were solid, stone build houses with a safety factor 2.7 constructed in.

So the 1.7m sqkm Greenland ice sheet which is 5000ft thick is melting enough in the middle of summer to cover the 170k sqkm of Florida in 2 inches of water in a day?

The continual loss over decades is a concern but that kind of data from The Gaurdian is just a nonsense. If they used the 0.44 sqkm that the Vatican City covers they would have got a much more impressive depth.

Neither.

Just that the comparison between Greenland and Florida is meaningless.

Edit (after post below but was doing calculation): If they had used the Vatican City as I suggested then it would be under approx 386363 inches (64393 ft) of water.

Ok. On the positive side it should cause awareness.

Greenland’s ice is melting faster than any time in the past 12,000 years, scientists have calculated, with the ice loss running at a rate of around one million tons a minute in 2019. Greenland and the earth’s other polar region of Antarctica have together lost 6.3tn tons of ice since 1994.

This rate of ice loss, which is accelerating as temperatures continue to increase, is changing ocean currents, altering marine ecosystems and posing a direct threat to the world’s low-lying coastal cities, which risk being inundated by flooding.

The ice sheets reflect light, so they in that area stop global warming. The more ice sheets melt the less reflection there is, i.e. more solar enters the atmosphere. Its an accelerating effect. More solar not reflected away means more melting, means more solar let in equals more melting. Its a runaway effect. While the gradual ocean level rise isn't "fantastic" and affecting anyone in the next two years, it all adds up.

As usual, these events will be noted, with no action. We can continue to watch more tornadoes, more C5 hurricanes, and more flash floods.
