Slash gets its own Documentary.

The big problem is that it destroys such large expanses of land, houses, crops, riverbank, seashore,
and bridge, after bridge.
At least one road bridge was lucky there was a rail bridge that took one for the team or more would have been cut.
The total cost ?

I get that, but why isnt this front page news 2 months ago, 6 months ago, and every year?. It doesnt seem to be

Because the forestry lobby is pretty strong.

It's about $$$

regarding the slash problem,

My understanding is that it is uneconomical for the industry to process the slash in an environmentally friendly way.

They used to just burn it all years ago, which was cheap but not good for air quality so they stopped doing that. Chipping it all would be a good solution but a logistical nightmare I imagine.

Govt could force them but the industry has power in small NZ.

I just received an e-mail from our Mortgage Broker who sorted our House and Contents Insurance, the TL: DR is that they are saying all Insurance Companies are now reviewing premiums and be prepared for a hike as we all have to pay for the weather events.

MS says 94mm today, YR says 25mm. I'm seeing this a lot lately, so much rain variance

heavy at Kaiwaka Mangawhai, some side roads closed. the flood plain is full to the brim and lapping the road, but otherwise ok.

Brynderwyn hill closed yet again.

looks like Wellsford to Warkworth took a big hit according to the rain radar.

This is not even the main event, we've got about 40mm of rain from 4 until 6pm let alone the continued rain over the hours afterwards and tomorrow... its just going to get pretty nasty out there so take care and be safe!

If it's any consolation, I did hear a bloke from the Met Service say this is the last of the really heavy rain for now. After this is over it's meant to be quite nice for some time.

Air NZ might need to temporarily replace their normal aircraft for amphibious options. Surface flooding on roads was already getting bad when I was in the Big Smoke at ~11am. Slowest trip back to the Waikato in light traffic I've been in, possibly ever. Mostly well behaved drivers.

And why, oh why, do all trains out west and from the central city cease operation in this weather.
They should, if well maintained and prepared, be the most reliable.

In Auckland :

"Go by train
Then there's rain
You're stranded"
