Bozo people who take videos while holding their phone in portrait orientation - then their video ends up on TV news and it just looks ridiculous and somewhat ignorant. It’s as if they don’t realise that most video is actually watched in landscape. It’s also as if they don’t realise they can flip their phones 90° and it will record in landscape in a split second.

I don’t know why Apple and other phone makers don’t make landscape the default orientation for video - and then people can flip to portrait if that’s really what they want.

Sometimes I just sit and think. Other times I just sit.

Most video recorded on a phone is viewed on a phone. Some apps don’t have a landscape option and controls stay in portrait. Habits are hard to break. Most video doesn’t have a chance to be on TV news.

People who assume that people are taking video for a different use case to what they are taking it for. ;)

But when places do put it into a landscape format, it really really annoys me to the point I cant watch it when they put blurry crap beside it to just fill the space up rather than just leave it black like it should be when playing a video at a different aspect ratio.

I dont ever flip my phone to landscape to watch things when scrolling thru facebook etc. If people take it landscape then it just becomes a silly little horizontal bar on the phone. Best to record in portrait if that's where you are putting the video. If some news show rips your content off to spoonfeed to boomers at 6pm then thats not really your problem.

No kidding. It's rare that I watch broadcast TV these days, but as far as I know they don't blur the edges when playing a 2.39:1 movie on a 1.78:1 channel. They probably crop the edges off instead, actually...

I want a damn android box that offers that as an option so that I can have a vertical display of apps, but no, they all pillarbox vertical apps into an unusable mess. Found one that does it but its a $200+ box for "digital signage" so forget that...

Saw someone got something working on a pi but I have minimal luck with anything on that lasting a decent length of time before something breaks and needs an update and that screws up other stuff so I'm avoiding that for now.

Blurry crap doesn’t generally get put beside landscape format on TV.

Blurry crap doesn’t generally get put beside landscape format on TV.

That's exactly my point. It's inconsistent. If it's taller than the TV then you get a blur. If it's wider then they either leave black bars, or cut the sides off.

The Audible.com site allows you to link your Audible Account to your Amazon account and download your Audible books to your Kindle.

Unless your account is with Audible in Australia.

This may well be because of Lawyers rather than technology.

Australia [as far as I know] has different publishing rights; and it gets 'complicated'.

I've noticed in the past that books my one of my favorite authors are not made available in Australia [I'm talking in (e)book format, not audio] for as long as 18 months after the initial US/UK releases - as a different publisher [or branch office, or whatever] has AU rights, and they clearly have a different agenda with respect to time-frames.

I wouldn't be surprised if a similar condition exists for audio books too.

A couple of us decided to walk over to Ohope beach; the walk takes about two hours and is mainly through the bush.

About 10 minutes in, the track splits and there was a woman from overseas looking completely lost, with no idea which way she needed to go. She'd been told that the track was "clearly signed". The sign to White Horse Drive, Hillcrest is labelled "White Horse Drive". The sign to Valley Road, Whakatane is labelled "Valley Road". And the sign to Pohutukawa Avenue, Ohope? It's labelled "Nga Tapuwae o Toi". Would you consider that clear?

We were able to point her in the right direction and she took off at a run. About 30 minutes later we get to another sign saying that you're leaving DOC land and that the council maintains the track ahead. A short distance ahead, the track merges with a dirt road. After a few minutes it splits off again, but at this point the signs are now in a different format and the name of the track has changed (to "Toi's Track", again not helpful when you're looking for "Ohope"). We proceed, and 20 minutes later are back in DOC land again. We actually met up with the tourist from earlier, who had not noticed the sign asking her to leave the road and had ended up getting lost again. Fortunately we were able to assure her that she was now heading in the right direction.

How hard is it to have useful signs?!

Agreed. It would be akin to signposting the Pennine Way in Welsh!

I have seen a number of instances of roadsigns (especially the curious AA ones, the purpose of which I cannot fathom) to places which then fail, when you arrive at a subsequent T junction, to tell you which way to go next!

It's possible, however it is not stated anywhere in the Kindle "supports Audible" advertising for example (or if it is, it is buried in the obscure smallprint no one reads).

The end result was cancelling my Australian account and opening a US account.
