Reanalyse: And why, oh why, do all trains out west and from the central city cease operation in this weather.
They should, if well maintained and prepared, be the most reliable. In Auckland :
"Go by train
Then there's rain
You're stranded"
gzt: Very lucky Auckland had low tide on both coasts 1-3pm today. Be wary.. tides will rise from here peaking early morning.
its pretty much over. might get the odd heavy shower in the next hour or so but otherwise its light rain for the next few days.
xpd:Weve been flooded again, worst yet....... and just had the new floor finished last week :(
Gonna be hounding council, they've been told multiple times what causes it and they do NOTHING about it.
Eva888: At least you don’t gave a kid left in a cave with searching called off till tomorrow.
yeah.
its sounding similar, but more tragic, than the waipu caves incident many years ago when they went in just before the storm front hit. they got flooded in and had to swim underwater to get out.

Apparently the weather system that caused today's downpour has now moved off to the east, so here's hoping it's just light rain overnight, although my weather app still says thunderstorms are on the way 😕

theres a few showers here and there as that front departs, but there is another coming through tomorrow which should bring light rain.
we actually got pretty lucky, most of the really big nasty stuff dumped offshore. if that had hit say auckland, it would have made Gabrielle look like a picnic.
Aucklands trains in the rain.
Train is a bit odd, the trackway is above any flooding.
Well apart from Britomart, now a weak link ?
The new future underground section is not looking promising?
Suppose they could have kept things going through the old strand station with shuttle bus support?
If there was a plan.
Things seem to be at the point where infrastructure maintenance and upgrade is critical for the new normal.
Auckland needs infil housing which will continue to put pressure on drainage, and then there are areas that were not great to start with.
Urgently Auckland needs to open the purse strings on drainage schemes and keeping existing drainage clear.
I think in Aussie that companies have been encouraged to develop IOT devices to monitor stormwater real time etc ?
The Strand station was in a terrible location for access to Queen Street. I imagine most people were put off having to transfer to a bus just to get to Queen Street.
At least with Britomart, you can get off the train and you're right there, just like in Wellington with the train station at the north end of Lambton Quay - very convenient for commuters.

That’s very sad and hope the damage is not too serious.

That's really sad, although I query the wisdom of whoever made the call to go caving when there was already a heavy rain warning in place beforehand.

Sorry to hear that. This is just terrible. I simply cannot imagine how mad and upset I would be in this situation.
There's something deeply wrong in Auckland's storm water management and therefore the entire city's management when less than a day's moderate to heavy rain cannot be shifted to the sea. It it maintenance of drains, pipes, culverts and streams? Or is it that the growth in impermeable surfaces without compensating storm water management? There has not been that much rain. Yesterday was heavy at times but not as if it was 24 hours solid heavy rain or anything like that.
