freitasm: It's beyond that. It's now an off topic topic.

Don't go trying to get it back on off topic, please.

maverick: ... you seem to think you always know best and will write 10 pages of what most of us will want to put a gun to our heads after the first paragraph....

Thanks for the open honesty even if it feels a bit harsh.

Your comments highlight to me one of the points I was attempting to question.  While I take some of your point on board from a personal point of view, I also question the tool sets we keep using with emailing lists.

Agreed.

Seems like it might be on topic, but in an off topic post about posting off topic content and filtering out offenders, I'm wondering if I should report it to the mods for consideration?

DonGould:  what MF posted does look kinda cool.

Yeah, I want one... I have no idea what I'd do with it, but I want one.

Exactly what I was thinking. Now to find a use and then buy one.

Anyway, the point is, only governments can censor. Everyone else is just asking you to be polite in their house.

Salty thanks for an interesting post (in the noise).

I'm not convinced we should give any collective the power to censor.

I have great trouble with the balance between the need to keep people well and from harm and the power we give those who are meant to protect us.

I still don't really know where to stand with respect to Kim Dotcom, but does strike me there are still many questions to ask and I often wonder who should actually ask and answer them.

If we take away the enemy with effective communications and diplomacy, then who do those who make a living from fighting fight?

Well, I'm certainly against government censorship, generally. There are some very limited circumstances where it is possibly appropriate, but there need to be very open safeguards against it being abused, and unfortunately the kinds of reasons why it might be appropriate also make it very difficult for the safeguards to be open.

Basically, I believe that I'm a grownup, and I should be able to make my own decisions about what is appropriate for me to see and hear, and no law should be able to tell me otherwise.

No, I wasn't mocking you...  or was I ;) (now I've used a ;) you won't know if I'm serious or not or just mocking myself... or you... oh I'm so confused, what was the question again?)

The thought did occur about the danger of promoting the idea of just buying something to play with and see what it can do.

I sense there is more than one topic in this thread.

Tsk. Please try not to go on topic in this thread. The rest of us are attempting to have a meandering discussion about ... something ... I don't know what though. IT SEEMED REALLY IMPORTANT AT THE TIME.

But are you a well grown up?

How can I know that you're not unwell?

As someone who does suffer from health issues, I have to trust others some days to consider my interests.

A coach won't put a player in harms way... we hope, or will he expend a player for the greater 'good' of wining the game for the team?

I'd like to think I'm a grown up too...  but I have to admit I'm not so grown up at all when I'm not well, and I've meet a few folk who range from well, unwell to just out right broken.

In a civil society, who looks after those people and how?

I haven't commented on the rest of what you said because I simply agree.  It's a complex question of ethics, trust, diplomacy and understanding (but understanding of what... )

These are reasons I'm not a big fan of encryption but am a bigger fan of open communication and discussion.

Well, certainly not the government. Thanks to Kim, since you mention him, we now know the agencies charged with protecting us from the boogeymen have illegally spied on 80-something people. The response to this is not to take a step back and consider the people, it's to pass new laws to make it not illegal any more (not to mention requiring certain organisations to run their operations according to the security rules of said acting-illegally agencies.

A lot of people have fought and died over a lot of years to get the legal system we have today with all sorts of checks and balances in it. We're quite happy to throw them all away just on the off-chance that they might occasionally allow us to catch a criminal.

Benjamin Franklin once said that a man who was prepared to trade an essential liberty in return for a promise of safety deserved neither liberty nor safety. I think he was right.
