The number of mailing lists I follow with people having a whinge about threads being off topic is just getting silly recently.

What is it with people on mailing lists who can't install filters to just ignore a thread?

More and more I get my mail on my phone.  Gmail for my phone just threads everything, so it's easy to just ignore a thread that's clearly left my interest.

Last week I was following thread after thread on the AusNog mailing list complaining about the volume of traffic.  The week before it was the Internet NZ PAG list, and today it's people moaning on the PHP list.

What's the point of discussion lists if people aren't allowed to 'discuss'?

Why is it that technical people can't use filtering tools?

What am I missing here?

Have to agree with you there!

It's a bit silly when a list gets over run by people complaining about all the off topic posts.

I think that's an interesting comment.

Following this cyber bullying issue, I wonder if all social media should be required to have simple tools for ignoring/filtering stuff out?

We often rant about freedom of speech, but where's my freedom to just not read or be presented with stuff I won't want to see?

I don't really regard that as a reasonable answer.

Why should I stop using Geekzone just because a single user is bugging me (as an example), or Twitter, Facebook, etc.

Don, those mailing lists you mentioned lack a thing we have on Geekzone: moderators. We do ask people to stop pushing threads off topic.

The reason for that is because people like focus. If a new topic emerges then best create a new thread.

Have you noticed all these complaints about discussions going off topic have a person in common?

I thought of creating this feature on Geekzone but some people couldn't get their heads around the idea...
