Disabled woman denied entry to U.S. after agent cites supposedly private medical details

Canadians with mental illnesses denied U.S. entry: Data entered into national police database accessible to American authorities: WikiLeaks

There is really no justification for sharing information like that with a foreign power.

It's clear there are some serious questions to be asked.

NZ immigration performs similar checks on people arriving in NZ. In fact, people have to declare their health status on their visa application forms. Immigration needs to validate that the information is correct.

I personally have no problem with this. Is it fair that I as a NZ tax payer fund our health system so that people like this can come into the country, take advantage of our health system, at my expense?

NZ and Australia shares police databases as well.

This is a good thing, it keeps the criminals out.

Or are you saying we should not be sharing this type of information?

i am fairly certain that visitors to NZ pay for any medical care

Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.

Yes, they need to have travel/medical insurance.

But what do we do with the risky ones that don't?

If they need medical attention they are provided it as any decent  society would do, they are invoiced for it.

Well, that depends on who the government defines as 'risky' today. Once it was communists, or gay people. At the moment it's Muslims and/or brown people who may or may not be Muslims. Who knows who it will be tomorrow? Taoist fundamentalists? SUV drivers? IPod owners? Linux users? Anti-vaxxers?

I'm talking about the ones that could take advantage of our heath system

The health thing is a red herring. Police databases are a red herring. I'm saying that sharing bulk information internationally on citizens who (a) have not committed any crime and (b) are not even subject of police investigation moves our societies closer to surveillance states. Once information leaves our border we have no control over how it is used.

Correct. But there are certain checks that need to be done before these people come into the country, and like the US blocks certain visitors from Canada, so does NZ block certain visitors.

http://www.immigration.govt.nz/opsmanual/index.htm

Section A4.1 Objective states the following:

The objectives of Health instructions are to:

  1. protect public health in New Zealand; and
  2. ensure that people entering New Zealand do not impose excessive costs and demands on New Zealand's health and special education services; and
  3. where applicable, ensure that applicants for entry to New Zealand are able to undertake the functions for which they have been granted entry.

NZ is no different to the US when it comes to the examples provided by gzt.

Maybe we should aim a little higher than 'no different to the US.' But that's just my opinion.

Today. But it's suggestive that you have something to hide. What do you have to hide, I wonder? Let's look through all your other records...

Jaywalks, drives at 103 on motorway, put music from CD onto iPod, forgot to mention that account he still has from 20 years ago in SA to the IRD, put up a shed in his back yard that is 5cm too large...
