Flickky:
ajobbins: So how does Semble make money?

Are they clipping the ticket? What about the telco's who have to provide the SIM?

Semble is owned by the telcos, so..

Interesting. Which probably explains the UICC SE path to a degree. HCE effectively makes the carrier redundant in the equation.

To me this seems commercially risky. A consortium of competitors wanting to wedge themselves into a place they really have no business....

Again, conceptually I love the idea of Semble, but I see it in it's current state is as a bad solution for a multitude of reasons.

sonyxperiageek: I really hope there will just be one solution to mobile payments in NZ for the future, not a special app from each institution. I.e Semble partnering with MOST if not all major banks in NZ.

Conceptually this sounds good. Practically tho, I can't see it lasting. Banks and telcos really don't like to share things.

Two further problems with HCE are that it does not work well as a replacement for stored value cards and Android's version doesn't support DESfire emulation due to the ISO-7816 SELECT. Hence why we have not seen an AT-HOP mobile app.

I have just been told an interesting bit: providing the SIM has been activated on the M8 it should be ok to pay using the M9... Just the app won't work.

Testing this today.

Funny thing is the Semble video on Vodafone site shows "BNZ", "ASB" and "AirPoints cards"... Obviously created before Air New Zealand and BNZ parted ways.

Ok, moving away from the "work, doesn't work" here are the releases:

From Semble:

Kiwi ingenuity, hard work and determination have paid off today as Semble, New Zealand’s first mobile wallet, launched nationally.

From today, close to one million smartphone users around the country will be able to download the free Semble app to make secure payments using only their smartphone.

Representing a breakthrough industry collaboration, Semble brings together mobile network operators (2degrees, Spark and Vodafone) with banking partners (ASB and BNZ) and payments network Paymark to offer the first ever integrated mobile wallet to New Zealanders.

Semble CEO Rob Ellis says the collaboration is unique on a global scale.

“Other mobile wallets have launched around the world, but Semble is the first to present a united front, with many industry leaders working together. Semble is a tremendous achievement for New Zealand. We have produced a mobile wallet that can cater for a wide range of services and what we are launching today with payments is just the beginning. We look forward to welcoming many more service providers to the Semble marketplace, including more banks as well as loyalty cards, public transport cards, ticketing, offers, vouchers and much more.”

The app works with the addition of a Semble Ready secure SIM card, housing a chip that is like those used in credit and debit cards. To use Semble, consumers hold their smartphone over any contactless terminal, wait for the ‘accepted’ notification on the terminal and the transaction is complete.

Ellis says the Semble app is designed to make the mobile wallet experience safe, easy and accessible.

“Semble is a natural evolution of how we already use our smartphones for so many different things on a day to day basis. Merging the wallet with the smartphone is the obvious next step.

It was important to design a product using the highest international security standards while still being something that’s easy for Kiwis to use and simple for businesses to join. I’m proud to say we have achieved that and I encourage New Zealanders to give it a go.”

Semble has been designed as a ‘one stop shop’ solution and the company’s vision is to replace all the cards in the over-stuffed wallet within one integrated app. Snapper has today been announced as the first new partner, which from June will see Snapper card holders extending the use of their smartphones into many more daily activities, including jumping aboard public transport.

Semble also announced today that in April it will commence an active trial testing special offers for redemption at point of sale using the Semble app, initially with New Zealand gourmet burger brand, BurgerFuel. This marks the beginning of a third Semble category offering (voucher and offers capability) following payments and transit categories, with more details of other services to be announced in coming months.

From Snapper:

Today Snapper announced its new partnership agreement with Semble, New Zealand’s mobile wallet, that will allow Snapper customers to use their smartphone to pay for all Snapper transactions such as catching a bus, paying for a taxi, paying for parking or buying a coffee.

Snapper CEO Miki Szikszai says “We are delighted to be announcing today that we are joining Semble as their first public transport partner, and are proud to support Semble as they deliver on their vision of a customer focused mobile payments platform for all of NZ.”

Snapper has long held the view that mobile is the preferred device for personal computing. As such we have consistently made business decisions to align with mobile technology, making it easy for our customers to take advantage of the power of their smartphone.

This mobile-first mentality has paid off for Snapper. Back in 2012 we received global recognition for launching a commercial mobile payments service in NZ that let 2degrees customers use their phones to pay for public transport, retail, taxis and parking, anywhere Snapper transactions were accepted. This was not only a first for NZ, but world leading outside of Korea and Japan.

It is a natural progression that Snapper should now partner with Semble, who have also created a breakthrough industry collaboration that is unique on a global scale. Semble brings together mobile network operators (2degrees, Spark and Vodafone) with banking partners (ASB and BNZ) and payments network Paymark, to offer the first integrated mobile wallet to New Zealanders.

By extending the network from solely 2degrees customers to all mobile network operators in New Zealand, it provides Snapper with the ability to make every day easier for tens of thousands of Vodafone and Spark customers who would like to use their smartphone to pay for public transport, simply by touching their phone to the Snapper reader.

“Our view is that Semble is the natural partner for us to work with. Semble provides distribution to the widest range of customers for secure, instant mobile payments. We are looking forward to launching in June, where Semble customers will be able to download a Snapper payment card into their Snapper wallet and use it throughout the Snapper network.” says Szikszai.

I've got an ASB Visa, and I'm on 2degrees, but choosing a Windows Phone excludes me.  Any word on when/if other platforms will be supported?

Look at their FAQ pages. Windows Phone not even on radar.

iOS will probably never be supported as it would mean Apple would have to open up the NFC API to developers. I can't see them doing that any time soon, not least of all because it would compete with ApplePay.

Windows phone.....don't think anything has been said one way or another, but suspect it will go the way that many other app developers do and ignore it due to low adoption. Also not sure if WP is even technically capable of this.

I've just been down to the Lambton Quay VF store and they have the SIM's in stock. Got one in my Note4, so will set it all up and test tomorrow.

WP is very well capable. Just devs don't want to put effort into small user base.
