Almost every single version of "God Defend New Zealand" has been dreary. The only exception I can think of is Alan Slater's arrangement, which was used at the start and end of broadcast on TV One for a few years.

You mean this one?

That's the one.

You have to be a very very good singer, for it to sound good. Often it sounds like rubbish at rugby games, because the singers aren't quite up to the job.

Black with a white Kiwi in the middle. Or take that theme and copy what Canada's design, but black to dominate. Maybe add a small white fern either side of the kiwi

I am for a new NZ flag, but not a black one for heavens sake. Its not a good group to belong to, the ISIS flag colours I mean..

I am not too concerned about the flag but I have to say that I do like this one.

I don't really get the obsession with a random and somewhat dull piece of vegetation....

I don't really understand why it should be such a mystery, many Nations have plants as symbols. EG Canada has a Maple leaf, England a Rose, Scotland a Thistle, Wales a Leek and Ireland a Clover to name a few.

Just because many people identify with bits of vegetation is no reason for me to understand why.

langers1972: Like many I couldn't care less about the flag, what bothers me is the grotesque waste of money. With an estimated 1 in 4 kiwi kids living in poverty is $26m spent on a glorified colouring competition a valid use of taxpayers money? Not to mention creaking hospitals, schools etc etc

I would prefer that 26 million was spent on the actual flag design, by paying top designers, rather than all these 'feel good' and 'PC' activities that are going on, and the various roadshows which are largely a waste of time. If you pay peanuts (or nothing for the design), you get monkeys.

+1 many times over.

This obsession with asking everyone what they think needs to stop. Tell them what is happening - it confuses most of them less and stops them labouring under the misapprehension that their views matter! ;-)

I actually really like that design.

It covers many things...the black background with silver fern for the "traditionalists" with the blue and the stars for the nod to the old flag.

You could replace the fern with a Koru, but I think the design as it is looks great...and I don;t think you need to understand anything about why people like vegetation on flags. It's just a cool design.

Personally, I wouldn't go to the Olympics or the World Cup or a big bus trip around Europe carrying a NZ flag as it stands...but I have done all of those things with a Silver Fern. Go figure.

I agree. I would vote for this one if I had to vote for something. To my mind the black symbolises the night sky (with the Southern Cross) and the blue the oceans that surround us. What could be more Kiwi?

My $0.02:

  1. I want to change the flag.
I think it's time we ditched the Union Jack and develop out own identity as a nation - and I say this as someone who has lived in New Zealand for 80% of my life but was born in England, and whose parents, grandparents and great grantparents were all born in either England, Scotland or Wales.

  2. Personally, I don't want a silver fern on it.
While that's used as a sporting emblem it doesn't need to be on our national flag - a bit like Australia's boxing kangaroo .
Also, a number of surveys have found that non-New Zealanders don't know what the stylised silver fern is - some think it looks like a white feather and some say a fish skeleton.

  3. I don't want a kiwi on it.
But only because every design with a kiwi looks like an 8 year old kid's school art project - let's write the motto under our coat of arms in Comic Sans while we're at it.

  4. I think the process is flawed.
There should have been one referendum at the last election to just ask whether we wanted to change the flag. If a reasonable majority said "Yes" then they could ask for design suggestions from the public, pick 20 or so, and put them up on a website and let people vote.

  5. $25M+ is too much.
If we spend that sort of money on this project and the government says we still don't have enough in the budget for tax cuts in 2017 I'm going to be p!$$ed off.

I really like many of the designs for their aesthetics and meaning but I'd rather not set a precedent for changing our national flag for the first time since we became self-governing over a century ago. Once it is changed, whether by referendum or fiat, it will become more difficult to stop it happening again. If it does change this time, we will be unable to settle the issue. At the moment, there are far too many divergent views and no sign of an obvious or solid consensus. We'd simply present a more viable opportunity for later politicians and interest groups to promote further change.

Replace the Union Flag with the red stars in a rectangle of black and leave the remainder plain blue.

I'm struggling with the idea that an Italian car manufacturer could have any influence over the flag of a nation a long way away from their home base...

In saying that, they have some lovely designs in their cars, so maybe they'd do a good job?

I'll bite ... it's fiat not Fiat.

Sideface: The Australian and New Zealand flags are cookie-cutter designs from the distant days of the British Empire.

All that these designs tell you is that these countries were once British colonies (Union Jack), and are located somewhere in the Southern hemisphere (Southern Cross).

Almost any design would be an improvement on this.

I agree, on our flag it's only the southern cross which represents NZ. In terms of surface area the stars make up probably only about 4% of the flag surface. So our flag is 4% NZ and 96% British. Frankly that's ridiculous.
