Rikkitic:

Off topic but relevant: Although I stopped watching NZ news and 'current affairs' (talk about oxymorons) after TV3's lobotomy, I still get doses of Story (retch) when I walk through the room. I can't stand, I mean really can not tolerate, listening to those idiotic back and forth exchanges between the two presenters venting their opinions to each other whilst pretending to ignore the fact that they have an audience. Or maybe they don't have an audience. I can't imagine anyone wanting to listen to that pointless drivel. What makes this even worse is that at least one of the talking heads is actually a very good, intelligent, capable TV journalist, though you certainly wouldn't know it from this crap. What a waste of talent.

The dialogue between the two of them has always struck me as really awkward. Heather's style seems quite juvenile, and Duncan often doesn't seem to know how to respond to her.

I really don't understand the motivation for having two presenters, particularly with Mediaworks' cost constraints.

Even if they're splitting one salary between the two of them, they're being paid too much to act like a couple of morons.

Sadly, I can only assume that ratings make these info-mainly-tainment programs worthwhile.

Indeed. If a programme featuring monkeys throwing $hit at each other rated highly, it would occupy a spot in prime time TV.

They rang me the other night (again!) to try and get me to subscribe to the paper.

Last time we took up the subscription was mainly to get the paper for lining the cat litter box and fire starting material.

Not a headline from a newspaper, but from an email sent to me...

To say thanks for being a loyal Member of the AA, we’re pleased to send you this offer for a complimentary five-week subscription to The New Zealand Herald. That’s the paper delivered to your home, seven days a week, for five weeks.

Yeah... nah. I they sent me the Herald then I'd only have to go and pull it out of the mailbox all the time!

gzt: Interesting! What kind of financial news do you want to see?

well for starters:

1.  A lot more coverage of the days activity international financial markets - New York, London, Tokyo, Singapore

2.  Some of the columns like the insightful ones Ambrose writes in the Telegraph about the impact of QE on interest rates and asset prices

3.  Proper analysis and explanation of major NZ stuff - like Reserve Bank OCR changes - not just a few dumbed-down quotes from a bank economist or lobbyist masquerading as proper analysis, or regurgitation of the press release (which I will read in full on the website for myself if I want to).

4.  Proper write-ups and analysis of NZ company financial results when they are released - again, not just a couple of quotes from the company's press-release and pre-packaged spin.

Measles claims 8 victims in Waikato outbreak

http://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/news/article.cfm?c_id=1&objectid=11629106

So 8 people dead? That would be serious!

No 8 people infected.

When I was in school. We sometimes had that number of people infected in our class.

Breaking News: Auckland motorway traffic at a standstill after crashes… details soon

Seriously? I feel that their definition of 'breaking news' is in need of tightening up. What they have here is ... A traffic bulletin.

In case the Herald editors are taking a break from playing on their phones here are some stories that would qualify as breaking news for future reference:

Volcano in NZ erupts

Earthquake flattens Auckland

Prime Minister resigns

Monarch dies

Plane crashes

Tsunami approaching

I guess I could bring up the ODT. Sometimes the headline of lost cat takes up the front page. (And odt prints on the old giant paper size, albeit thinner than a few mm in all its pages)
