Question for networkn. Assume your wife is out running on her own and and someone yells out to her "Real men ride women!". She comes home and tells you what happened, what do you say?

My first question would be... Why would someone say that to someone out RUNNING?

Secondly, I seriously doubt my wife would give a toss quite frankly, but if she did, I'd remind her that it was a joke, and maybe point out the funny side of it.

It should be pretty obvious to you that I wouldn't find such a thing overly concerning, and if it wasn't obvious, then you aren't paying attention.

I just called my FIL who is an Avid cyclist (and a pretty conservative person in general) and he just laughed out loud.

I find people smoking on the street where I have no way to not join them in their filthy habit considerably more offensive, esp since there isn't any funny side to balance it out.

Wow. Lets explore this.

You are at a dinner party, in a group of people including yourself and your wife, and someone in the group turns to your wife and directly says to her, in front of you and the others ..."Hey, have your realised that only real men ride women!"

What would you say? if anything?

My response would be something equally witty like "that's what she said " and we'd all laugh.

My wife's response is unprintable her but the gist of her response would be a reference the real man adjective. She would then return to her glass of wine

Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.

networkn: Well he got ticked off by his Dad, apologised and said there would be no repeat of the behavior. Case closed. Let's move on.

I don't see any apology occured there at all. It looks like a classic rugby style apology. He's called Dad to apologise to Dad for letting the team down.

Dad told him his behaviour was 'inappropriate'.

For me the apology was fine to be low key since the offending was low key. The only people he owes an apology to is the cyclists which he probably doesn't know, and his Dad (maybe).

He doesn't owe you one, nor me.

Anyways, I'm over this conversation. As I surmised in my first post, there are people determined to be offended over every little thing, which I have no patience for. I am all for an overall improvement in some areas of behaviour, but I do not wish to be

part of a society where every little joke is turned into a national newspaper discussion when there are so many other much more important issues to give our attention to.

In my opinion, people in general, need to climb off their high horses and soap boxes, pull their head in and accept a jokes a joke, and be considerably less sensitive.

Personally I find this behaviour reprehensible. It's also dangerous and distracting.

It is not 'just a joke'.

Personally I could not care less who the father of a minor celebrity is.

I can easily admit I am somewhat sensitive to this kind of harassment. It's pretty nasty stuff.

Seems some people just love to get upset over every little thing. I think they are addicted to their righteous indignation!

You appear to exist in some kind of parallel universe where simplistic placement of others and their attitudes on a self-constructed, red-herring polarity is the norm. No, this case isn't a big deal per se; but it doesn't follow from this that people aren't entitled to be appalled by the attitudes expressed, nor is the pointing out of the appalling attitude necessarily any kind of self-righteous addiction, let alone demonstrative of any kind of addiction to such. But being dramatic and conclusory is apparently okay for you, yet you are never afraid to call out and criticise people whose attitudes you disagree with.

The thing I can't work out is whether 'bike' can be used as a slang word here to mean the same as it can in the UK.

If so, he could have said that real men ride bikes and meant the same thing....

I'm not a fan of the Key family, but the media attention around this is just ridiculous, and is obviously only "news worthy" because of who he is.

Personally I think what he said was amusing, and there are so many complete twat cyclists that yelling things at them must surely be the norm rather than the exception?

If people yelling abuse at others because of what they are is the norm, you should perhaps rethink who the "twats" are.

I wonder what it'll be next time with Key junior and his ongoing quest to be famous for being famous, or perhaps he'll just marry a Kardashian, settle down, have kids, and that'll be the last we hear about him.

Yes it can. I think that was supposed to be part of Key junior's "humour".

Is there derogatory slang word to describe "dim-witted slutty young men".

Possibly, although I have no personal issue with referring to the slutty in derogatory terms since their behaviour is entirely voluntary.

Networkn: it might surprise you that I wasn't the one who declared simplistically that people just love to get outraged over every little thing merely because they found Key's words distasteful. Nor was I the person who diagnosed others as being addicted to moralistic outrage. You've only splattered such views all over this thread.

You've missed a point - when men behave the same way, terms used to describe them (if there are any single words?) aren't derogatory.

Yes, I thought you'd conveniently miss the point I was making. Never mind.

If you don't know what outrage addiction is, feel free to search the Internet.

People who get "outraged", or "appalled" as behaviour (or attitudes) like this, need some perspective.

Yesterday someone got onto a public bus in Australia and set a bus driver on FIRE. He died being burned alive. Lots of people on the bus as well. THAT is appalling. What MK did was inappropriate at worst and it should be over now that he has apologised (though even if he prostrated himself on a cross it wouldn't be enough for some people).

I agree with that only to the point where you claim that Max Key has apologised. I've seen that his father has "told him off" and "apologised on his behalf" .

If Key Junior himself has actually apologised properly, it would be nice if the media would report it, as "real men (TM)" shouldn't need to be verbally spanked then apologised for by their fathers when they're 21YO.

Meanwhile, it's going global:

DONALD TRUMP
"No one has greater respect for women than Max Key."
