Indeed, reviews have glaring problems. On the one hand, as discussed, reviews early on tell you nothing about longevity, and reviews on longevity tell you nothing about their current models!

e.g. My AEG dishwasher has had zero problems and is nearly 20 years old but that has no relevance for today's purchases. (Darn, that has probably put the hex on it!).

...and with quite a lot of reviews, you hear a lot more from the people who had problems than the ones who didn't.

Obviously with 20 year old dishwashers, you'll never buy one now that'll last 20 years.

Anyhoo, decided to get one of these...

10kg, good price and 5 year warranty included. If anybody here bought one and thinks they're garbage, don't want to know (please).

Understand the sentiment in your last sentence!

Coincidentally, we replaced our washer and drier about 4 years ago with Samsungs from Smiths City.

Best of British - I am sure you will have a good experience.

When I was shopping for new washer and dryer it came down to LG or samsung. LG won out because it looked better and the matching condenser dryer was cheaper. Heard great things about both of them for front loaders.

Actually, no, I wasn't trying to be presumptuous, just trying to be positive! And hopeful!

What outcome would you expect

Machine is not in warranty

Reported issue Early march 2017

Technician came out - did nothing - cost $130 (subsequently told not a technical fault so nothing to be done)

Told to clean with epsom salts and then told to use ceraclen and keep using ceraclen

Fast foward June 2017 - no real difference

Bosch technician came and took machine away

1 week later - confirm its a technical fault, needs a new drum.

At only 3.5 Years old & after being stuffed around by Bosch support I would now want them the fix the washing washine for free or supply the parts free at least.

Could you see if they are more forthcoming about the actual problem needing parts replaced?

The story line usually seems that the low water concept of front loaders is challenged by taking the phosphates out of the washing powder. The back of the drum by the bearing seems to be where the hard to shift deposits end up. On our machine most cycles just dip the outer edge of the drum in water and it gets forced through the drum "paddles" into the washing.

I don't know whether having a spray jet squirting that area would help.

Since the fault is bearing failure - the shaft seals would have failed first. Water then starts getting into the bearings. Grease is getting washed out of the bearings, which is causing the black marks on the OPs clothes. (and the bearings will get damaged quickly) Presumably the way the machine is designed, you can't replace the bearings and shaft seals by themselves. So a whole new drum is needed. Of course running lots of cleaning cycles puts more stress on the shaft seals.

Assuming that is was a bearing fail. One on site repairman claimed bearing OK. If it is a sealed drum type the drum would have to be replaced even to clean it completely.

How does everyone really know if the drum is the problem or their machine in dirty.  A bit surprised Bosch or Able didnt even consideer it was a possibility.  Even when they took it away... it was reluctantly.......telling me about hair balls.

In my recent experiences with repair technicians (so called) They do not have a good success rate of correct diagnosis first or sometimes second time around.

It's more like lets take an educated guess & fingers crossed we are right. Especially when the customer is picking up the repair tab.

.......I have this in writing via an email.  Bosch will refund the $130 and repair free of charge, so CGA works, but I feel its on the consumer to raise it when theres a problem.  I really doubt the manufacturers would comply with CGA if they think the consumer will pay.

That's a good result but as in your case you ceratinly had to work hard to achieve it.
