jpoc:

I can see some products but have not managed to reach the checkout.

Todays soft launch was mostly for internal testing and to selected customers.. I think some of the listings managed to filter through to the general public.. full launch to the general public is scheduled for tomorrow.

Quote from NZ Herald article -

http://www.nzherald.co.nz/business/news/article.cfm?c_id=3&objectid=11947387

Meanwhile, retail billionaire Gerry Harvey has said he will "wait and see" what Amazon's prices are like before deciding whether Harvey Norman will price-match. "I don't know yet," he said.

"If they're coming out and they're competitive prices we'll be price-matching, but if they come out and do bait advertising and predatory pricing, that's a different thing altogether, because that's not their everyday price.

"But of course if you do that then that's against the law. What are they regulators going to do if they start doing things like that? Zero per cent margin is predatory pricing. What they're trying to do here is force everyone else into bankruptcy, then when they send everyone broke, up go the prices."

Harvey said he was "a bit flabbergasted" as to why Amazon would launch just before Christmas, when "most people don't want to buy online because they're scared" they won't receive the items in time.

"Amazon have got a big new warehouse, big new staff, they're all set to make some gigantic stuff-ups," he said. "It makes no sense. All they'll do is get themselves into trouble with a whole heap of people all complaining, 'I didn't get it.'

"If it was me I'd open in February or March. When the 14 of December comes, no one will buy [online]. It makes no sense."

Im sure his views are complete not influenced by the potential drop in sales at what will be the busiest shopping time of the year....

That is fantastic. Love his comments about Amazon's new warehouse and the likely hood of 'gigantic stuff-ups' - arguably in the top 5 shippers in the world with one of the most advanced assesst management and shipping systems in the world...

I agree. This is the definition of FUD. If I was to back 1 company in the world to setup in a remote location (compared to their HQ) and do a great job, it would be Amazon.

I laughed when I read that. I realise Amazon is using Australians (tongue-out) but when did you last read of Amazon deliveries being a "gigantic stuff up"?! This is the company that delivers stuff in less than 2 hours flat if you live in certain places...and delivers stuff all over the world, every day.

Really Harvey? Amazon literally has its own planes. I guess they're no match for the army of Harvey Norman cargo planes that are flying overhead as we speak /s

I purchased an up spec tv recorder when i was living in ausi a couple of years ago from harvey norman and it took them 3 weeks to supply. Apparantly this was not uncommon from all accounts. Wouldn't be hard for Amazon blow HN away on service from my experience.

It's Black Friday and Amazon hasn't launched in Aussie yet. What has gone wrong?

It's a LOT of money to be missing out on... these companies want to sell as much as possible as early as possible...

Or maybe they're keeping their powder dry until Cyber Monday?

Or they stuffed up? Who knows.

Maybe their testing day didn't go as well as expected? Or all their warehouse staff called in sick to watch the Ashes?!

Ahaha Gerry Harvey comes out with this sort of rubbish all the time. The guy is obviously a great businessman considering where Harvey Norman is at but some of his beliefs are mind-bogglingly stupid sometimes. This sort of thing is obviously completely out of self interest. He's whinged about GST for online purchases in the past too (as if being a billionaire isn't enough).

I ordered some shaver cleaner cartridges from them online in NZ around 6 weeks ago. A simple $40 order, of something they had in stock.

Took 9 days to be delivered to my wife at work, was actually delivered to a guy in a different company on a different floor of the same building.

I ordered $100 of stuff from Amazon to go to my brother in the US. He had it in less than a day.
