DjShadow:

Saw it today and I was pretty happy with it, considering it felt rather long.

I wish they explained where Snoke came from...is he in any way linked to Darth Sidious?

I get the hunch they have left the door open for side-project movies like Rogue One to be used to fill in plot holes

Other note I'll make is The Embassy in Wellington City is a great cinema to watch it given the main cinema is fitted out with Dolby Atmos

Origin of Snoke is explained in some picture book apparently. ie not in the movie.

The Embassy pushed 28 minutes of ads in front of the movie when I watched it there.

No product placement in the movie though! It's becoming more and more prominent in most movies. Audi, BMW, Coca-Cola, Apple, et al in a galaxy far far away just too much of a stretch.

Our local cinema had 19 minutes of ads and promos prior to the feature starting.

I didn't time the ads, but the session started at 11:20am and we were out at 2pm.

Being upset at this series (so far) has made me re watch 3 shows I swore never to watch again. Phantom Menace, Attack of the Clones, Revenge of the Sith

And they were amazing. Anakin, the subject of the series (at least I thought he was, going by what I watched), was very well featured.

Force Awakens and Last Jedi, I don't know who the main character(s) is, they are given so little screen time and hardly do anything interesting. *sigh

Pretty difficult to do product placement in fantasy films like this. Can't see BMW branded spaceships somehow. As long as the product placement doesn't affect the story in anyway, I can't see that much of an issue,. However IMO if someone is paying to go to see a film, thye hsouldn't be subjected to significant advertising as well, as that means that additional time is being spent watching those adverts. While product placement generally doesn't waste peoples time, as they are integrated into the story. .

Nearly everything and everyone in the film is already a product ; )

After seeing the 2D I saw the 3D version. I really enjoyed it.

The throne room scene still looks unfinished, I could guess at the reasons for that. Anyway it's way way better in 3D!

The corny and comedic aspects fit the medium really well. For some reason the cameos became obvious. Nice job!

A bit off topic, but... This Star Wars Hero Droid BB8 is so cool!

Is it product placement if they create characters and equipment to sell more toys and collectibles? Porgs, BB-9E, the million and one different tie fighters/stormtroopers/walkers etc...

Porgs were cute and not as annoying as ewoks but also served no purpose - same with BB-9E.

Yeah the inclusion of some aspects seems completely pointless if they’re not going to get a moment of story.
Surely there should have been a BB-8 va BB-9E faceoff?

My original comment about product placement was really in reference to the ads that occur in the cinema prior to a screening. As much a dig at other movies, everything from James Bond to The Avengers, where watches, cars, computers, phones, etc are prominently displayed. Classic example is Apes riding past a Coca-Cola truck in War for the Planet of the Apes.
Star Wars had no ability to do this.
Sitting through a few ads so I can watch the movie for ten bucks isn't too much to ask.
George Lucas is the original master of movie merchandising and the current batch of Star Wars stuff is just a continuation of that.

I see BB-9E toy is out.  Contributed little to the movie story, but get's a merchandise opportunity underway.

Laughed when I heard Last Jedi referred to as an Al-Qaeda/ISIS support movie.  Band of a few rebels all being celebrated for committing suicide.

Right from the first bomber run, through to Holdo's Lightspeed sacrifice and even Finn trying to kill himself on Hoth.
