IlDuce: Also as another separate question, for years now when buying from various large chain stores, when the sale is almost clinched and I ask about cost and duration of extended warranty, they almost universally say "oh thats $140, but you can have it for $100", etc.

One place I went to yesterday was all righteous about it and said all the people who have ever done that should have been sacked by now as its a serious breach in company policy, and that those prices cannot be discounted under any circumstance.

So behind the scenes whats going on?

Back in the days when I worked for one of the big chains we had a huge profit margin on extended warranties and a miniscule margin on computers. So, essentially there was a lot of room for us to discount the extended warranty as long as we still had enough gross profit to make the overall sale worthwhile. We were required to heavily pressure customers into purchasing extended warranties as it was barely worthwhile for us to sell a computer without an extended warranty.

Admittedly this was a few years ago now, but I'd be surprised if things have changed significantly.

Having been given staff discount on my first laptop purchase as a family member worked there, I can tell you that the extended warrantys have huge markups!!! Staff discount on an extended warranty was cost + GST and it was still $150 under retail.....

we were typically allowed to give a 10% discount on the product to get a 5 year warranty.
sometimes the warranty was less than ten percent ofthe price of the item, which meant a free 5 year warranty on that item!

bond and bond have a Navman MY30 (entry level satnav) for $99.
prices on Trademe are between $130-$200, so $99 seems like a bargain.

I went to the Warehouse to get one but gave up waiting in the queue

Decided to pay the extra $10 and got one from Dick Smith for $399. Didn't realise Dick Smith's deal also included an HDMI cable as well so it all worked out

Have just bought a 250GB XB360 Slim hard drive off ebay for $76 delivered

That makes it $475 total

Ended up spending more than I planned

$650 at Just Jeans
$280 at Hallensteins
$100 at Harvey Norman

And then filled the gas tank in the car... $180

And all when I planned to stay at home for boxing day...

My iphone charging cable went through the wash. It must have got jammed somewhere in the machine and ripped a section of the plastic sheath off.

Went down to DSE and they had half price on phone accessories so bought two, I was going to get a spare anyway so two for $20 (not apple branded) was not a bad outcome for a mini disaster.

I have also been thinking of getting the Belkin armband for my iPhone, but I'm pretty sure that Belkin produce the iPhone and iPod touch armbands as separate products due to the slight differences in physical dimensions. Whenever I have been in Dick Smith they have only had the iPod Touch version available.
