oxnsox: Seems theres a lot of politics in this whole issue. It appears the leader of the opposition (in Oz) was aware of the action Qantas would take, a week before it happened, but the PM (and govt) weren't.

It's hard to believe the PM and her government didn't know if the opposition knew. Also there is ample evidence that it had been planned well before as there had been hotel bookings made to accommodate some people affected by this action.

While there is no doubt faults on both sides this pre-emptive action makes it appear there is no genuine desire from the Qantas management to negotiate. It's in the same category as a wildcat strike from any of the unions, something that has not happened to date, at least not during the current negotiations.

Well to be fair, a pilot is responsible for 1 plane and 1 crew and 1 set of passengers at a time, Alan Joyce is responsible for all of them, and everything else as well. I think 5M is a lot, but in terms of responsibility....

Thats a whole new debate.. What price responsibility?

Did Joyce take responsibility for shutting the airline down (and the millions of lost revenue there), or did he try and shift the reasoning over to the unions???

I'll think you'll find Joyce delegated responsibility for the shutdown to the unions.

That sort of thing scares the crap out of me.

This time the entertainment system, next time what? If management down bow to demands do they blow up an engine to see if management will take a bit more notice?

This sabotage claim seems all to convenient to me with whats going on at Qantas at the moment. Apparently there are several ways these wires could have been damaged or cut, none of which would mean sabotage. The only people who are likely to have the opportunity to conduct the sabotage are the very guys who found the damage and brought it to the notice of the company. While there are several groups at Qantas currently in contract negotiation I very much doubt any of them would stoop to sabotage.

Qantas management has been caught out telling lies to discredit some of their employee groups and from what I've read elsewhere this might be another example of that.
