sbiddle: I'm not quite sure why JB would want to buy DSE. DSE have many underperforming stores in poor locations, many would argue they would be far better off continuining their own expansion plans with their own brand rather than buying a brand that has been struggling for a number of years.

Exactly. And it's more than that; they don't really compete in most departments. They both sell phones, laptops and computer accessories. But apart from that there's not much competition. JB's lowest price stuff is at the high end of DSE's quality range for just about everything else - e.g. TVs.

There are some interesting issues at play here:

the growth of online shopping
the use of commission only sales teams
the lack of skill or training in the best solutions for customers

Thinking about how apple manages their retail (most profitable stores per square foot in the world) maybe Dick Smith should concentrate on:

Better trained staff
Removing commissions for staff
Focussing on offering a better service
Giving online discounts for buying online, and offering pick up at the store with that (same day).
Not doing the upsell
Stocking good stuff not crap
Offering something people can't get elsewhere (maybe the combination of components and knowledge)

Worth noting that Best Buy had a pretty bad last quarter...
Circuit City went down the toilet in 2010...
Radioshack also had one of it's worst quarters ever...

DS still have lots of stuff I can't get elsewhere, like adapters, splitters, printable discs, small electronics stuff and more. There's nowhere else that sells that stuff in my city. I'd hate to see them go.

I would not like DSE to go away. As said above there are plenty of things you can only find there - or have to dig online, which means they are not promptly available for those emergency situations...

Chainsaw: DS still have lots of stuff I can't get elsewhere, like adapters, splitters, printable discs, small electronics stuff and more. There's nowhere else that sells that stuff in my city. I'd hate to see them go.

I went into my local DSE 2 weeks ago to buy some rca / headphone adapters and got told that what stock they have of those sort of items was it, they arn't restocking,i questioned about all the other types of adapters, components etc and the sales person said yes the lot. Kind of sad really, it is just another electronics store now. We got Jaycar a few months back so its not the end of the world.

I am actually having trouble with DSE at the moment. Trying to get something replaced under it's warranty, but they say the model is no longer available, and I would have to pay the difference if I want the equivalent new model. I got the original on special, but the newer model is not on special and is double the price I paid, and they are actually selling it for a lot more than the manufacturers own RRP. Anyone know if I do have to pay extra?

I think you would need to pay the extra if you wanted the new model. If you don't want to do that, then just get a full refund.

But I don't want the new model, I just want the model I have got, or it repairing, or it replacing with the equivalent model today. eg. It is not my fault that they no longer have stock of my model, and they are required to keep parts the service life. They did also offer me a 'store credit' or gift voucher, but that won't buy me the equivalent model, so I will be left out of pocket.
I have actually just found a letter in the Consumer magazine with someone who has almost an identical problem when they purchased a discounted product. Consumer does say that under the CGA you are entitled to a replacement of the same model, or one of equivalent value to the one that failed. I couldn't buy the equivalent product at the price I paid today, as it was on special, but the equivalent value of the product before the discount is more than what the equivalent product today costs. Apparently consumers letter says that the writter did get it replaced with the equivalent model at no extra cost in the end, so I might have to arm myself with this letter when I go in to see them about it.

The stupid thing is I could buy the replacement product they are now selling for less at another retailer, than the price difference that DSE would charge me. eg I could keep the defective one and buy the new one from another retailer for less than returning the defective product to DSE and paying the price difference for the new model. DSEs price is more than double what it can be purchased for elsewhere according to pricespy.

I would but I still couldn't buy an equivalent product with the cash, and I do need to get a replacement. Because I have got it in writing by consumer that they should replace with the current equivalent one, I will probably just email them the letter of the similar situation. I don't think it will be too much of a hassle. I have actually been dealing with the manufacturers support for months trying to get it resolved and going through their various troubleshooting steps, and they told me to return it to the store for it to be replaced as they have said it was defective.
