Could you add GZers who clutter pages by posting block quotes or YouTube videos in threads with little or no comment of their own as well please?

(I support your multi-quote limit by the way. Only some people won’t like it)

The kids are fine, I'm just used to waking up fairly early and once I am awake I'm awake. The kids are normally up at 5:45am for school so they are used to being up early as well but they know to be quiet and their tablets don't switch on until 7am.

We have the privilege of live in help so it's not that I have to be up early, I just wake up and then am awake.

Interesting. I am typically a heavy sleeper, though certain noises like kids in the middle of the night will wake me pretty quickly. About a year ago, I stopped being able to sleep in at all as well. ANY noise wakes me and once awake I seem be to unable to sleep. Very frustrating.

Suddenly every web site in the world is popping up autoplay videos! Where do these stupid ideas come from? What idiots think it is a good idea to annoy the hell out of their visitors?

I think you don't understand the purpose of most websites you access :)

They aren't there for your viewing pleasure, with a small number of exceptions, they are there to make money for their owners either directly or indirectly. Advertising, no matter how obnoxious, is how they mostly do this :)

A lot of people don't mind the advertisement - I don't. I don't like autoplay ads.

Other than this, you're right - ads pay for the free web people see today. People and infrastructure are not cheap.

I don't like autoplay ads either, though I generally don't mind ads, some of the best things I've done or bought have come from ads so long as they are appropriately targeted.

I also dislike autoplay ads but I'm talking about something different here. The last few days I have repeatedly encountered sites that start playing videos describing what the site is about or providing information of one kind or another relating to the site. I hate this kind of thing. If I want to watch a video, I will click on it. If I'm trying to read something, the videos are distracting and annoying. Suddenly everyone seems to be doing it. That is what I was complaining about.

Edited to add: It is like those useless 'greeters' who block your path as you enter a shop. If I have a question, I will go to the customer service desk. Is that not what it's for?

This goes in-line with sites such as BBC that have published more and more two-minute-long videos with news reporting instead of writing an article. Not everyone is in an environment where it's ok to listen to something.

Or, indeed, wants to do so even if the environment is suitable.

iOS games that have ads for other games in them, that despite the iPhone being on silent, still have sound!! And you have to toggle the mute button onscreen, which often gets interpreted (probably deliberately) as a click and therefore launches the app store or a website.

Quite embarrassing when using shared facilities. 😜

Is there a setting in Chrome to mute sound on all tabs by default?  I'd far rather playing sound on web-browser tabs was an "opt-in" feature to un-mute sites - rather than an opt-out.

Also what annoys me is how sites and apps use different placement and action to control volume, some the scroll wheel works - and some it doesn't and in some cases the volume slider is too small to make accurate adjustments.

Yeah, I often hear that from a couple of cubicles over when using facilities. I dont stick around to see who it was so not sure why they would feel embarrased.
