Who would notice, except you?

Probably nobody, but it still annoyed me as soon as I realised!

It was actually something I only learned a couple of days ago, and I've caught myself using the 'wrong' kind multiple times since then!

I'm sure this has already been said - and possibly by me but....

A#sH0*e drivers who either speed up to or don't give a single inch to let you in. Or those who park across in front of you when you are trying to exit a driveway.

There is NO NEED for this... most other countries I have driven in have such better road manners than us.

I had a very traditional English education and gained A grades in O and A Level English.

I was always taught to use " these " not 'these'.

The Times is usually a reasonable arbiter of correct English and they use "these".

Forum message signatures that are more than a couple of lines long. I really don't want to see a complete list of all the hardware you're using or how fast your internet connection is.

What do you mean by 'correct' English?

I understand your 'passion' for all things of Mother England, but no individual, organisation or nation - even dear 'Old Blighty' - has a monopoly on determining 'correct' English on behalf of the wider world.

I find it so bizarre that people treat language as static and immutable, and that they believe the 'version' they subscribe to as somehow the 'true' version. Sounds like a dogma or religion. Especially ironic in regards to English, given what a mongrel of a language it is...

Billy Connelly does a great section when he is in NZ about how great we are as a people, but how we are the worst drivers in the world. I'd believe it, though a recent drive through Los Angeles/Santa Barbara has me questioning that.
