If only we had some way of linking directly to an article instead of making people search for it.

Stuff currently has a blatant click bait headline on its front page:

Has Noah's Ark sunk?

Which clicks through to a story entitled:

Two dead cows and a dead sheep puzzle Cantabrians after washing up on beach

That's really piss poor, Stuff.

RunningMan: Stuff faulted for headline mistake

Hmmmmm.....

"No factual basis?" I'm not confident that part of the complaint is true.

Moving into a nursing home can also be a protecting factor against suicide. On the other hand, anticipation of moving into a nursing home can also be a major reason why some older people may display suicidal behaviour.  The fear of becoming dependent on other people, and the expected loss of personal possessions (and with them, their identity), privacy and control over their own lives, all have a role.

(Harwood D, Jacoby R. Suicidal behavior among the elderly. In: Hawton K, Van Heeringen K, eds. The international handbook of suicide and attempted suicide. Chichester: Wiley, 2000275–291.)

Methinks the criticism of the fact that the headline didn't reflect the content of the article, and too slow retraction of the headline was fair, but the headline itself - in isolation - was quite possibly true.  Perhaps "Stuff's" main problem in that case was writing a crappy poorly researched article on a complex subject.  Knock me down with a feather.

NZ Herald:

Two separate tornadoes have caused considerable damage to properties across the North Island this evening.

New Plymouth was struck by an earthquake around 5.30pm, uprooting trees and tearing iron roofing from houses.

All I can say is "Wow!" an earthquake tearing iron etc as well as a tornado!

So THAT's why a friend randomly asked whether I still had a roof. Never mind that I'm almost 300 km from New Plymouth...

Herald has rewritten those opening lines.

Whilst the difficult we can do immediately, the impossible takes a bit longer. However, miracles you will have to wait for.

They probably use this thread as their proof reader by proxy, since they obviously don't employ one on their staff!

I heard that later. I was talking to someone from Ohope this afternoon who was completely unaware of this tornado's existence until today; "I was playing Skyrim with my headphones on and thought it was just my son making a racket upstairs". It can't have been too severe if she didn't notice any difference from usual!
