I'd be happy if people keen to scapegoat outdoor smokers would extend that zealotry to confront and criticise drivers of heavily polluting cars. Instead I read how VW's cheating on emissions was "no big deal", about how to make cars perform better by "chipping" them which defeats emission controls, and about how much consumer stuff they have in their houses - most of made in China, killing mainly Chinese people of course... then a large can of worms starts to open.

Pollution from vehicle exhausts kills over 50,000 people per annum in the USA, passive smoking (when estimated including indoor smoking which used to be commonplace - but which I haven't seen happen at all for at least a decade) killed about 3,000. Balance is needed.

I'd agree, but we do not even have proper pollution control standards in the WoF test.

I passed a van the other day that looked as though it was being run on coal....

A mate of mine recently bought a Euro 5 compliant diesel. First thing he did was disable the EGR by software chipping, then altered engine mapping so it produced xxx more KW and xxx more torque. He also removed the second cat - which is the one dealing with NOx. There's a remote chance a clever WOF inspector might pick up that the NOx reduction converter is missing, no chance they'd pick up the other tampering. Even the most important thing (making it go like a shower of proverbial) is illegal unless certified (any tampering at all with turbo diesels) - but nobody is checking. How many of the utes on the road are tampered like this? Nobody knows because nobody checks.

I was following that a few weeks ago, and on acceleration that looked as though it was running on coal too. That said, some of the other pollutants it was probably churning out, nanoparticulates and NOx, aren't visible in exhaust.

That there's no monetary figure to define wealth between (multi) millionaire and billionaire. Being a millionaire used to really mean something, and I don't know any billionaires, so it's kind of an abstract concept.

I generally agree. Large fine for each offence selling, not criminal, and if individuals want to persevere, then they can grow their own, give it away, whatever.

I am not generally a fan of banning things per se. Once we go down that route there are many things we could ban!

I would think something equivalent to licensed premises where you go to have a smoke rather than a beer, and the privacy of your own home provided no children live in it or adult non smokers, should be fine.

I am not generally a fan of banning things per se. Once we go down that route there are many things we could ban!

I would think something equivalent to licensed premises where you go to have a smoke rather than a beer, and the privacy of your own home provided no children live in it or adult non smokers, should be fine.

By banning I mean the manufacture, importation and selling of tobacco products and total ban on smoking around children and any place other than the smokers own home (excluding rented or leased).

I am also against bans as a matter of principle. I don't think it is the government's or anyone else's business what adults do to themselves as long as they don't do it to anyone else. I would favour tight restrictions on smoking as long as facilities are made available where people can smoke. Just saying don't do it here, don't do it there, don't do it anywhere else is not a fair and balanced response in my opinion.

The guy next to me who hasn't washed in a week or changed the clothes he's wearing and the really obnoxious group of 50yo+ people on the train who are talking so loud, playing their crap music out of a crap phone speaker, antagonizing anyone who try to tell them to pull their head in.
