Dunnersfella: Because the company is failing to deliver products that people have paid for.

Because the company no longer stands by the product that they sold in the past.

Because the company hasn't paid their bills to suppliers who sent them products... but other people who ran DSE got paid VERY well.

And advertising massive sales where items are still more expensive that the same items at regular price in other stores.

And staff taking sale items off the shelf to keep for themselves.

And staff in Australia underpaid entitlements by up to AU$2,000,000 while the Anchorage investment guys made around $500,000,000 out if Dick Smith (and one of them has recently been appointed to the the board of the Reserve Bank of Australia - literally "laughing all the way to the Bank?").

amiga500: When people despise a brand it's all over!

I would struggle to understand why people should despise a brand? Reading through this thread - from some contributors I have certainly got an overwhelming sense of hatred coupled with a desire to see DSE fail rather than come through this. I fail to understand why people think like that, I really do.

For a lot of people it'll be a case of "Once bitten, twice shy" or "The one that thankfully got away", i.e. people with issues like the Dick Smith Fitbit Backorder debacle, or people that were close to buying from DS around the time of the receivership or not long before that didn't and are thinking "well thank goodness I don't need to worry".

It's a tainted brand, they might be able to pull the wool over the majorities eyes with a rebrand, but that is a matter for whomever is trying to buy them as a going concern (if there really is anyone).

My issue with DS goes fundamentally beyond the conduct of the previous private equity owners. My problem with it is that its offerings have been pathetic, incoherent and lousy for years. The product range is poor, pricing is laughable, some of the promotions are annoying and sometimes even deceptive, and as DS fumbles from place to place in search of a solution, it amazingly never manages to even start correcting any of its issues.

Are you really struggling to see the issues here?

Or do you think people are merely being vindictive for no reason.

Based on other posts I can only assume this is just trolling.  I think you can add gift vouchers to your list and you have nailed it.

Now the Australian websites are saying Chinese and Indian electronics companies are interested in DSE. Whether this is for real or journos guessing, time will tell I suppose.

Chinese and Indian restaurants have always fascinated me. They are usually vast, usually empty, yet always open. I have never understood how they make them pay so maybe this is a model that would work for DS. If anyone can keep a company going that doesn't sell anything, it is the Chinese and Indians.

You must be going to totally different restaurants to the ones I go to, which are normally packed. Perhaps youre going too early?

One Of The Brains Behind The Dick Smith ‘Windfall’ Just Got Appointed To The Reserve Bank (January 14, 2016)

EXTRACTS:

"Adviser to Anchorage’s Investment Committee is none other than Allan Moss, former CEO of Macquarie Bank and the husband of former Independent Commission Against Corruption Commissioner, Irene Moss."

"Just three weeks before the collapse of Dick Smith, federal treasurer Scott Morrison announced that Moss would be joining the board of the Reserve Bank of Australia."

"Like we said, in business there’s winners and there’s losers"

Yeah peak times, days, and off days very normal in those type of business. Sometimes without any rational explanation. In the Indian case you can notice a steady stream of takeaway collections while you are the only one there ; ).

Ok, they may be under receivership, but +1 to the DSE team at Paraparaumu. Some of the best service I have had from an appliance shop for a long time. Thanks.

Thanks for the link, very interesting pdf file.    That catalogue shows why Dick Smith was so successful, he made it personal.   Something like Allan Martin of LV Martin in Wellington.    LV Martin sold crappy NZ made TV's & washing machines but made their crappiness a winner for his business with the slogan 'It's the putting right that counts'.    If I remember rightly he even put his home phone number in his newspaper advertisements.

Just wondering what is Dick Smith demonstrating at the counter, is it some sort of hand held game, or a calculator??

'It's the putting right that counts'.

Always annoyed me that, as it implied it really is going to break, but we'll be there to help fix it again.

I'd prefer something more reliable in the first instance personally.

Went into Wellington CBD DSE over the weekend.  What a sorry looking place that is now.

Now the staff don't have the inconvenience of unpacking an endless supply of cardboard boxes filled with Dick Smith branded HDMI cables and surge protectors they can spend the day leaning on their counters or hiding out the back..
