How long it takes the ‘white’ orcon router to get an internet connection.

You’re supposed to turn off both the ONT and the router, then turn them back on. From memory it would take around 5 minutes to get a dhcp lease but when I tried this a few days ago I gave up after 30 minutes.

My Mikrotik router gets a lease the instant it’s connected to the ONT, no reboots required.

We allow these institutions to impose far too many unpaid, illogical and pointless tasks on us in the guise of compliance or similar BS. We should not be so complacent.

The bank knows darned well who I am. My valid driving licence is identical to the one they have as far as my identity is concerned. The whole thing is utterly pointless.

Printers are my nemesis.

They seem to work fine when I set them up, but every time I need to quickly print something I have to spend 10mins getting the demon printer to work - Super annoying! And also the fact that printer ink is one of the most expensive liquids on the planet.

Banks are REQUIRED to follow the process as defined by the banking regulators; otherwise they are out of compliance and will lose their license to operate and hence be FORCED to cease business.

I hope you can see that would be inconvenient to everyone... :-)

There is a fairly good chance that the majority of the staff actually having to deal with the ramifications of the external process think it's just as big a waste of time that you do; but never-the-less, the law must be obeyed.

If you really want to gripe in a meaningful direction, gripe at the regulator (Reserve Bank), not your actual bank/branch.

In my experience, cheaper non-OEM ink and/or refills are the cause of all the frustration.

We had no end of issues with our printer, streaks, gaps, blobs, messes, outright refusal to do anything; but once I decided that my time was more valuable than the few $$ I was saving by not buying geninue ink, all the issues went away.

Our printer is now rock solid, and immediately springs to life and prints wonderfully even after a gap between printouts of several weeks.

Money well spent.

Is there a defined procedure/regulation WRT driving license? I bank with ANZ and Kiwibank, and I'm pretty sure I've never given either of them a scan of my drivers license - I've maybe shown my license as ID when withdrawing cash. I do have a scan of my license on file, I can't remember what it was for - maybe renting a car overseas or passport renewal application. IIRC wasn't there some protection in the legislation when photo ID licenses were introduced so that they wouldn't become a defacto "Government ID card"? Something along the lines of they could be used for photo ID, but you couldn't be compelled to provide a license for ID except for driving related matters.

Can you travel on a expired passport? I went through this when I was working at Westpac years ago. We had customers with paper licences on file. They'd come in to re-doc a mortgage or something and get upset when we'd ask to update their ID.

Again, you don't have to do anything, but you might find when you need something important done quickly, it's going to come up.

My guess is that the use of limited period identity documents is aimed at preventing prolonged identity theft. So a bad guy can usurp your identity for a maximum of 10 years, but then his illicitly obtained drivers license or passport expires, and he has to go through the process of obtaining a new identity document.

yes, but how your identity is verified is the issue.

After all, no one MUST have a drivers license or passport. There will be customers out there who have neither. How do they get verified?

There are few ways, I can't remember but there is an option for those with no passport or driver's licence that required either a JP or someone or a HANZ card. We used to come across it when at a finance company I used to work for (pre-Westpac!)

Edit. It was a HANZ card and birth certificate.
