My ASB card works fine at Countdown in Johnsonville. If it's over a given amount it asks for a pin, but it's still faster.

I wonder if this will save you signing for the purchses over seas like you have to do with the current system as it does not ask you for a pin in the current situation and if the $80 purchase still applies.

A few questions I will have to put to my bank.

I've just got back from Canada. In Quebec, Paywave & Paypass terminals were rare. In Vancouver they are everywhere. Limits differ though - most stores I purchased from had a $80 limit but others had $50.

I found myself drinking Starbucks coffee rather than any other simply because paying with the Starbucks app on my phone was so quick and easy. It's frustrating to get a tantalising glimpse into how easy things can be and not be able to do it everywhere.

I think you have to let your contact centre staff know about this issues. I just order a new card and didn't realise there is an issue with the paywave system on our ASB visa debit cards.....

For your information guys, I am a regular BP coffee person and everytime i tried to use my ASB Debit Card, it keeps on saying transaction failed.

When I goto Countdown last time, it asked me to swipe the card and enter my PIN number

Tried in Kmart, it looks fine. (that was 1 1/2 months ago)

Hi Jacky, thanks for letting us know. When you ordered your replacement Visa Debit card, did you mention to our Contact Centre rep that it was because you were having problems using PayWave at Countdown? We would like to follow up on this.

scottjpalmer: I've had my ASB Platinum VISA replaced twice and still very inconsistent. Worked last 2 times at BP then yesterday no go. Guy behind the counter told me the same thing, ASB cards are the bulk of the sufferers.

ASB needs to take ownership of this as while it may not be their fault, it is obviously their customers sufffering the most.

I give up.

Yes. I did mention to your contact centre about Countdown but mostly with BP at Kyper Pass in Newmarket.

Maybe whether you can have a good on the investigation

There are two distinct issues here though.

One being some presumably dodgy NFC cards from ASB, and the other being the way Visa Debit cards are handled by some merchants since it has to be processed as a credit card transaction for NFC functionality to work.

My partner and her BNZ Visa Debit PayWave card refused to work. It scanned, then said to insert/swipe at both KMart and Countdown St Lukes (both within half an hour) of eachother.
We went to BNZ and they said that Countdown don't support Visa PayWave. We then believed them and left. However when I went back to Countdown the next day, they were advertising the "Countdown OneCard Visa PayWave" card!.
Maybe it is an issue with the BNZ Visa Debit card at Countdown and KMart?

I can confirm that my BNZ Mastercard Credit Card with PayPass has been working perfectly at all stores including Countdown, so very weird.

Do you press savings/cheque or credit when you use your BNZ debit card?

Paywave transactions can only be processed as credit card transactions by some merchants, so will fail if you normally use the savings/cheque buttons for a swipe or EMV transaction.

Dead right.
This because currently EFTPOS is free to merchants.
A debit card with contactless capability will be processed through the Card Scheme route rather than the proprietary debit system, therefore costing the merchant for each contactless debit transaction (where previously they were free).
Imagine the cost to th country's biggest merchants.
HUGE.

Had not thought to look on here first but I'd been having similar problems with my ANZ debit card not working at countdown. I contacted my bank today and told them what was going on, first thing they said was "are you using it at countdown?" and as mentioned above countdown terminals only accept credit cards.

The whole time I had thought my card was faulty as the staff at countdown said paywave does work and in Nelson they're the only place I go to that have paywave terminals. Could've gone and tried at BP but I never go there and wasn't going to go out of my way to try it.

I think countdown (and other merchants) should tell train their staff about paywave better as many times I asked why it would not work they just shrugged.

Upto now, the ASB Debit card still doesn't read on Farmers, BP, Countdown....
