With a mSATA drive the Windows experience for the disk drive is 8.1 which is the fastest I have ever seen. I guess the combination of SSD and 6Gbs SATA makes all the difference.

Biggest issue is it only has 2 USB ports so with one taken up with mouse/keyboard I have to use the other with a hub to support

- USB hard drive
- USB DVB-T tuner (Hauppauge)
- USB USB-UIRT (for channel switching)
- USB analogue capture card for cable TV

The accessories take up more space than the PC itself!

The Celeron is quite quick but since I only use the PC for recording with all playback done with Popcorn Hours I didn't need anything faster.

To get back on topic the unit and mSATA drive both came from Amazon, ordered at the same time but in separate shipments and free shipping.

Wouldn't work for me. In our case the HTPC is our recording and playback device. Storage is not a problem, but HDTV (H.264) support is, so it needs a good GPU and Celeron won't do it.

Well out of interest I took a recording of TV3 (HD) and played it back on the machine using VLC and it played fine. The Intel HD graphics on the MB can handle the H.264 files fine.

The box has both HDMI and Displayport out and drives a 60" at 1920x1080 32bit colour with no problem.

This just happened to me, order a ssd drive last night and it went straight into customs within hours of ordering. Either drives get flagged for checking of inappropriate material or it's a delay thing. Oh well, we will see when it arrives.

Which brand of SSD did you order?

Some flash products are still too expensive here, but SSD appears to be a different story. Unless there is a compelling reason (price/performance or favorite brand), I'd find the Seagate 600 series is a good buy locally (PB Tech and alike).

SD cards too...eg, harvey norman selling sandisk 32gb 45MB/s card for $169. Same card from amazon, around $38nzd, and with free shipping too if you plan group purchases well.

Some people in NZ are making a small fortune importing these things -- although, I wonder how many actually pay stupid HN prices?

Well, I think it's a LITTLE unfair to make it sound so simple. Bricks and Mortar stores have much higher costs to go with a physical presence, staff on hand to assist, provide advice.

It's all well and good that you know what you want, but MOST people don't, they want an end result but have no idea what is required. Most people are happy to pay extra for that.

The other problem is the mass of fake cards. Sandisk in particular are available all over the place as fakes and very hard to tell from originals (it is something Sandisk should spend a lot more effort on, as it must be costing them a fortune in lost sales).

I now use only Hoodman cards from the USA, bought direct from Hoodman. They are super high quality and they test each card extensively themselves in the USA before releasing it for sale. They used to actually make them in the USA, but decided that the best facilities were in Taiwan, so they are made there to their specs and then tested when they arrive in the US.

Hoodman are too small a maker to be faked really - and buying direct from them pretty much obviates that risk anyway.

good luck with that, my package has arrived in nz over a week ago, its now two days pass the expected delivery date and no signs of movement....guess its sitting at a depot somewhere in nz collecting dust

Just an update that the first box of my last order that arrived in NZ on 2 Feb, was delivered this morning, 3 weeks after ordering. Today is the estimated delivery date (US time?) they might have given up waiting for the other box which was still in states on 4 Feb, slept for over a week in a depot.

Some other bits ordered from UK last Monday also arrived this morning. Mail service. iparcel could do better - and their tracing page sucks on a phone.

I took advantage of the free delivery. I ordered 4 items at the same time - two items needed to be shipped via the NZ Post YouShop and the other two sent via Amazon direct. The YouShop items arrived yesterday, but the Amazon items are still showing as in the US - I think there is a bit of a wait being incurred.

So I ordered a speaker on Friday 7th, it shipped the next day, then ordered a Cisco switch yesterday (13th), it shipped today.
Speaker is shipping with i-parcel, estimated delivery 25th Feb, the Cisco is going DHL and should be here 20th Feb.
Pretty impressive speed for the switch considering the shipping was free-less than a week. And the total came to about $380 NZD so hopefully won't be charged the import fees they have collected
