Thanks for the tip. I ignored this morning's email flyer because they have all not interested me recently, so I missed this special. Got 3 packs of the AA's for work and home. They will be absolutely rubbish batteries, but for very low drain devices like remotes they will be fine.

I'm not signed up, so just used the link here. But it could have got me in their store, and given the opportunity to sell me something else, as stores can use specials to get people in their stores. It is often why many deals like this are instore deals only.

Yes, but it would still cost them to ship them, that was my point. Essentially it would have saved them money to buy in store.

...an it's tracked. According to track'n'trace mine should get delivered this morning. They can't have made money on this. Maybe they needed to clear space in the warehouse.

I've bought small items off DSE numerous times over the past few years when they've provided free postage - every item has been significantly reduced in price (eg HDMI cable down to $4, sent in a large box!), and I don't believe they'd have made money from any of these transactions. So it's not a new sales 'technique' and it doesn't seem to make good financial sense, but it does allow consumers to pick up some bargains.

I haven't read the above... but I see Dick Smith have Spend and Save Monday promotion. For first 1000 customers.

I'd like to purchase a phone in the mailer worth $150 (Nokia Lumia 520)... however yesterday I noticed it was gone from website... and I therefore can't take advantage of the promotion today. I called up their help 0800 number and said the phone I want IS in current brochure, but gone online. I'd really like to order one is there a way around this... and was told the phone is not sold on our market. So I guess it may be end of line.

interesting, they are still advertising this phone in this weeks mailer , 12th -25th, for $149 plus free sim and a bonus $20 top up on Vodafone.

Common sense is not as common as you think.

As a marketing model DS is really good the new owners must be taking a firm line as everything is very rigid.

What they havnt got sorted is the fulfillment side I have bought several things of them and you can wait a week same with HN

The ones to beat are Mighty-ape they are fantastic! if i in wangas order by 4 its on my doorstep in the morning

Fulfilment is known to be critical in mail order if the customer doesn't receive the goods within 24 hours of order

they "think" that they will not get them and start negative thoughts about the comapny. The benefit of the slick sale is lost

Maybe they are trying to increase their email mailing list, as well as to take business away from the competition. If they are breaking even or making a small loss on a item, it also means that a comptitior isn't getting that business either. But it means they have got a potential future cusomter they can market to, and perhaps the loss just comes out of their advertising budget.

I noticed that their new advertsing campaign slogan is 'unleash your smith', obviously they realized they couldn't use the first word of their business name in that slogan..
